The Mental Health Condition We Don’t Talk About Enough: Everything You Need to Know About OCD
Manage episode 424190094 series 2459117
#241: While anxiety and depression are commonly discussed, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) often goes unnoticed, especially among Black women, leading many of us to feeling hesitant to seek help.
In this episode, I’m joined by licensed therapist and Clinical Supervisor, Saraa Lee (LCSW) from NOCD, for a conversation about mental health, misconceptions in the healthcare industry, and how OCD can manifest into our daily lives.
Together, we discuss the ins and outs of OCD, Saraa’s experience living with the disorder, and why treatment for overcoming intrusive thought patterns has to be handled with care.
We also talk about…
- Early symptoms of OCD and why they’re overlooked
- The difference between OCD and anxiety
- Common types of OCD and their triggers
- Why specialized, evidence-based treatment is more effective for OCD than talk therapy
- How exposure therapy (ERP) works for OCD
- How OCD can affect friends, family, and romantic relationships
- How to support someone experiencing OCD
