- 2002 - Twenty-five years after his death, Elvis Presley has a No. 1 album in 17 countries - including the United States - when Elv1s 30 #1 Hits makes its debut
- Birthdays: "American Pie" singer Don McLean is 74

- 1945 - Elvis Presley made his first ever-public appearance in a talent contest at the Mississippi Alabama Dairy Show singing "Old Shep". Elvis was 10 years old at the time and came in second.
- 1999 - Akio Morita Founder of Sony electronics, died at age 78. The 1979 Sony Walkman transformed both Sony and consumers across the world.
- Birthdays: Chubby Checker is 81

- 1975 - Pink Floyd went to No. 1 on the U.K. album chart with Wish You Were Here.
- 1986 - CBS-TV newsman Dan Rather was caught off guard and roughed up in NYC by one man, as another yelled the enigmatic, "Kenneth, what is the frequency?" R.E.M. was inspired to later write a song about the incident, and it was their first single off of their 1994 album Monster.
- 2000 - The Chicks are the big winners at the CMA Awards, taking Entertainer of the Year, Album of the Year (for Fly), Vocal Group of the Year and Video of the Year for "Goodbye Earl."
- Birthdays: Richard Reed Parry of Arcade Fire is 45

- 1979 - ABBA visited the White House while on tour for the first and only time in America. They met President Carter's daughter Amy, who was a big fan.

- 1979 - "Gotta Serve Somebody" gave Bob Dylan his 12th U.S. top 40 hit when it entered the chart for the first time. Recorded at Muscle Shoals Sound Studios in Muscle Shoals, Ala.
