The Truth About VOCs, Greenwashing, and Healthy Homes: Part 1 Could the materials in your home be releasing harmful chemicals into the air you breathe? In part one of this two-part interview, Andy Pace exposes the hidden toxins in your walls, floors, and furniture—volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and hazardous air pollutants (HAPs). Andy explains how modern energy-efficient designs have contributed to “sick building syndrome,” why “zero VOC” labels and certain air-purifying methods don’t always mean healthier air, and how off-gassing continues long after that new paint smell fades. From the history behind the green building movement to choosing the best low-toxin materials, this episode is filled with expert tips to help you create a healthier home even for the most chemically sensitive residents. If you want clean indoor air, it’s time to get nosy about VOCs and HAPs! Episode Highlights · When did the green and healthy building movements start, and why? (3:43) · What are VOCs and hazardous air pollutants (HAPs)? (9:00) · What are the different types of VOCs and how do they enter our homes? (14:58) · What is formaldehyde, and how does it get into homes? (22:47) · What health effects do VOCs cause, and how can those with Multiple Chemical Sensitivities (MCS) or Toxicant-Induced Loss of Tolerance (TILT) reduce exposure? (27:27) · How did Andy get involved with healthy building materials? (33:38) · What do “green,” “healthy,” “natural,” and “greenwashing” mean in building materials? (40:16) · Can you reliably test for VOCs, and how can you reduce exposure to VOCs and other HAPs? (45:28) · Does “baking-out” or ozone help reduce VOCs? (48:04) Links Mentioned In Interview: https://changetheairfoundation.org/understanding-air-cleaners-purifiers-with-carl-grimes/ About Our Guest: Brian Tinker has been building custom homes in Colorado for the last 20 years. During this time, Brian has seen many changes in building science, and oftentimes the changes within building codes have not been based on what's best for the people that live in the homes. This became very real for Brian, when his family discovered that his wife and son both had mold illness. Living in a 1931 house with plenty of water damage became an immediate issue. Tinker Homes had already begun changing the way they were building to make homes healthier, but this new information rapidly increased the building science changes in his company. Brian is now working with several organizations and groups to increase awareness about building new homes with better building practices to change the quality of the air inside the homes. Dr. Crista joins us to talk about her new book, A Light in the Dark for PANDAS & PANS . PANDAS and PANS is a condition that is estimated to affect up to 1 in 200 children and adolescents. Both PANDAS and PANS fall under the umbrella of autoimmune encephalitis and can have devastating effects on the child and the family. Sadly, many of these children will suffer for years without a proper diagnosis and treatment. In this interview, we discuss what this condition is, causes, how it affects the body, and the resulting symptoms. Dr. Crista highlights a frequently overlooked piece of the puzzle to treating these children - exposures to environmental triggers like weed killer, mold, external electromagnetic frequencies (eEMFs), and mercury. According to Dr. Jill Crista, “Environmental toxins predispose children to PANDAS and PANS, and impede their healing.” The good news is it is possible to test for and mitigate exposure to these toxins for better health well-being! Even if you don’t have a child with PANDAS or PANS, be sure to check out this interview. These four environmental triggers can prime the body for many other conditions. Episode Highlights: · What is PANDAS & PANS? What causes it? What are some symptoms associated with this condition? (2:00) · What is the connection between our gut microbes and our immune system? (7:05) · Infections and toxins can literally change a child’s brain. Can you talk to us briefly about how that happens? (16:37) · What are the top four environmental burdens for individuals with PANS & PANDAS? (20:13) · What test can be used to confirm mold-related illness? Why can’t a mold allergy test be used to rule out mold-related illness? (29:10) · What test can be used to determine glyphosate exposure? (33:04) · What test can be used to test for mercury exposure? (34:22) · What are your “The Core Four” for treatment for a child with PANDAS & PANS?
