Salim studied at Notre Dame Jamhour College in Lebanon before continuing his studies abroad due to the Lebanese Civil War. He joined the École Polytechnique in France, earned a degree in chemical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and later pursued an MBA at the University of Chicago. In 1986, Salim co-founded "Murex" with Laurent Néel, which became a global leader in developing software for risk management in financial markets. In addition to his professional achievements, Salim founded the "MIM" Museum in Beirut in 2013, which houses the largest private collection of minerals in the world. He is committed to supporting education and culture in Lebanon through contributions to various educational institutions. In the 2022 Lebanese presidential elections, Salim Edde ran for president, declaring his priorities to support education, culture, and the development of academic institutions in Lebanon. Raeda talks to us about the impact of the Palestinian struggle on her life and shares her journey between art and politics, having worked as a press secretary for President Yasser Arafat from 1987 to 1994. Raeda speaks openly about personal liberation that does not contradict with national struggle and the differences between generations of resistance, how the tools of resistance have shifted from weapons to social media, which has helped spread the Palestinian cause worldwide. After his death on April 18 of the year 2006, Yasma dedicated her life to preserving his legacy through her involvement in various social and developmental initiatives, as well as her work with the Fuleihan Foundation, which aims to continue his role in Lebanon's development by improving public governance and building national capacities. Yasma speaks in this episode about her late husband's accomplishments, including his significant role in the Paris I and II agreements, and sheds light on his personal life and his relationship with Rafik Hariri. She also shares the moments of pain and sorrow she went through after losing her husband and how she faced the psychological challenges that followed. She discusses the healing process she underwent and how she found the strength to continue her journey after this great loss. Send us a text In this episode, Ricardo Karam meets Serwan Baran, an Iraqi Kurdish artist whose life has been a series of challenges and transformations, which are reflected in his work that embodies conflict, pain, and belonging. Born in Baghdad in 1968, he developed a passion for painting from a young age, which led him to study fine arts at Babylon University, where he graduated in 1992 as the first in his class. After graduating, he began his career as a professor at the Faculty of Fine Arts at Baghdad University for seven years, but he soon realized that teaching limited his creative energy and decided to devote himself to his art. From being arrested at the age of 16 for a political joke, to the years of economic siege in the 1990s when he earned a salary of only $4 per month, to leaving Iraq and living in Syria and Jordan before later settling outside his homeland, Baran's life has been marked by difficult experiences that have characterized his life. His work was influenced by these stages, moving from realistic painting to a more abstract style, using visual symbols that reflect violence, power, and psychological brokenness.
