Episode Description: Jessica B. Harris may have been born and raised in New York City, but she has Tennessee roots through her father and has spent much of her life split between homes in the Northeast and the South – specifically New Orleans. For more than fifty years, she has been a college professor, a writer, and a lecturer, and her many books have earned her a reputation as an authority on food of the African Diaspora, as well as a lifetime achievement award from the James Beard Foundation. A few years back, Netflix adapted her book, High on the Hog: A Culinary Journey from Africa to America , into a 4 part docuseries. And I’m very proud to say that she’s a longtime contributor to Southern Living with a regular column called The Welcome Table. This episode was recorded in the Southern Living Birmingham studios, and Sid and Jessica talked about her mother’s signature mac and cheese, the cast-iron skillet she’d be sure to save if ever her house were on fire, and her dear friend, the late New Orleans chef Leah Chase. My Own Personal Brand of Heroine is a podcast by two friends, Nat and Lida, who read the Twilight series at the gorgeous and impressionable age of 12. Knowing what they know now about the fame (infamy?) of the Twilight franchise, they are revisiting these books and their past selves to uncover exactly how this toxic love story made them who they are today. Okay, all jokes aside, there’s a lot to be discussed here. The good and most definitely the bad WILL be torn apart by our ravenous minds. If Twilight means anything to you, we invite you to join us on this spiral. PS. We will also be discussing the movies, duh.

In this episode, Bella Swan emerges as the quintessential depressed teen, Lida encounters her new favorite character, a romantic rival materializes in the form of a well-endowed receptionist, and Nat has a special request for Gwyneth Paltrow. Note: This episode has some sound interference, mostly us inexplicably banging our mics. We didn’t do it on purpose, but we think it gives our podcast a nice homey feel. But if you need an apology, we’re sorry, and we promise we get better at recording...mostly…. If you’re reading along (you poser), this episode is all about the preface and chapter 1.
