Imani Ellis has always believed community is a superpower. What began as a small gathering in her Harlem apartment grew into The Creative Collective NYC and CultureCon — one of the largest conferences celebrating creators of color. But behind the highlight reels and celebrity speakers, Imani’s journey has been defined by burnout, bold leaps and learning when to pause. In this episode, Ben and Kathleen sit down with Imani and explore what it takes to transform a passion project into a cultural movement. From balancing a demanding career at NBCUniversal with late-night CultureCon planning, to walking away from work at the height of burnout for a self-designed “creative residency” in Paris, Imani shares the realities of leadership, rest and why joy and community must stay at the center of her work. ×In this episode of Transformative Principal, host Jethro Jones interviews Adrian Ireland, an international educator, systems thinker, and author of "Designing Different." Together, they explore the challenges and opportunities in reimagining the architecture of learning within schools. The conversation delves into why educational reform often fails when it focuses on incremental improvements rather than structural changes, emphasizing the importance of authentic learning experiences, student motivation, and agency. Adrian shares insights on how small but significant changes—like creating "sandboxes" for experimentation and expanding the audience for student work—can lead to meaningful transformation. The discussion covers the pitfalls of over-relying on extrinsic motivators like grades, the value of interdisciplinary and project-based learning, and the need for flexible systems that nurture both passion and competence in students. Practical examples, such as school newspapers and project weeks, illustrate how schools can foster ownership, engagement, and real-world skills. Making little pockets where students can be seen in a different light with different experiences How education has an architecture problem, not an effort problem. The flow of the river. Curricularize them! Neglect students’ autonomy at our own demise. More about motivation. Intrinsic vs. extrinsic motivation. False fails - good ideas that are implemented into architecture that rejects them. Design principles - authenticity, flexibility, mutuality (we are connected), and simplexity (designed simple but able to handle a complex reality) School Newspaper as an example of mutuality. The whole game at a junior level - Good architectures that already exist. Avenues World School What comes first, passion or competence? Interdisciplinary teams How to be a transformative principal? Make a decision that we are going to have two official expositions of student work. Create a sandbox, a space of possibility. About Adrian Ireland Adrian Ireland is an international educator, systems thinker, and author dedicated to reimagining the architecture of learning. With extensive experience teaching and leading across Asia and Europe, Adrian has spent his career challenging the traditional, standardized models of education by championing learner-centered approaches that value individuality, curiosity, and creativity. His entrepreneurial mindset drives him to experiment with bold ideas, test innovative systems, and design frameworks that empower both students and educators to thrive. He wears a mix of hats that have shaped his perspectives on education: Watching the development and natural learning progressions of his two boys as father. Coaching Volleyball at both high and low levels. Teaching in the classroom in both middle and high school. Leading full school change efforts around interdisciplinary learning and project-based learning. Redesigning time and scheduling to allow space for change and most recently Coordinating the MYP (Middle Years Program). Rooted in both practical classroom experience and a deep understanding of educational theory, Adrian believes that the future of learning lies not in small improvements, but in daring to create something fundamentally different. His work blends systems thinking with human-centered design principles, helping schools and organizations shift toward environments that foster authentic engagement and personal growth. In "Designing Different", Adrian shares the lessons, insights, and strategies gathered from years of navigating the complexity of educational reform, inspiring others to move beyond "better" and design the future of learning. In this episode of Transformative Principal, Jethro Jones welcomes three inspiring guests to discuss the origins and impact of the Test Kitchen Education Foundation in Fort Madison, Iowa. Brent Zirkel shares how the foundation was created to blend culinary arts with education, providing students with essential life and academic skills. Kumar Withanage, a renowned chef and passionate educator, recounts his journey from Sri Lanka to the U.S. and his motivation to give back to the community through after-school programs that teach both cooking and life lessons. Julian Pope, a former student and participant, describes how the Test Kitchen became a turning point in his life, offering mentorship, practical skills, and opportunities that helped him pursue higher education. The conversation highlights the power of mentorship, the importance of community, and the value of providing safe, supportive spaces for students to grow. How Test Kitchen Education Foundation came to be. How Julien got involved through the robotics program. Cooking provides instant feedback. The power of mentorship. ACT - Appreciate, Clean up after yourself, Thank everyone. Mentorship and agreements or commitments About Kumar Wickramasingha Kumar Wickramasingha is best known in southeast Iowa for his culinary expertise and his deep commitment to educational equity. A native of Sri Lanka, Kumar immigrated to the United States in 1986, where he was welcomed by George and Jean Alton—two Fort Madison educators who gave him a home and the encouragement to pursue higher education. Inspired by their generosity and belief in the power of education, Kumar fulfilled his American dream by becoming a successful restaurateur and later a healthcare executive. Kumar's most enduring legacy, however, may be his work in education reform. As the founder of the Test Kitchen Education Foundation (TKEF), he created the Elliott Test Kitchen (ETK)—a one-of-a-kind afterschool program that used food and mentorship to bring academic support to students in rural Iowa. With a blend of culinary creativity and educational accountability, the program helped countless students from all backgrounds succeed in school, build life skills, and discover their potential. Today, Kumar is collaborating with former ETK student Julien Pope on a forthcoming book that tells the story of the Test Kitchen’s origins, challenges, and powerful impact. The book not only highlights the life-changing effects of academic support and mentorship, but also draws a powerful connection between the decline of quality education in rural communities and the rise of political polarization in America. Through real stories and hard truths, the project aims to spark a national conversation—and offer a roadmap for healing both systems. Kumar continues to live in Fort Madison and remains passionate about giving back to the community that once lifted him up. His work is a testament to the idea that the best way to thank a community is to build something lasting within it. About Julien Pope Julien Pope is a ghostwriter and freelance developmental editor currently working in Fort Madison, Iowa. As a high schooler, his life was positively impacted by the Elliott Test Kitchen, and, using the resources provided to him by the ETK, he successfully enrolled at the University of Iowa as an English and Creative Writing Major. Recently graduated, he has returned to Fort Madison to work on a series of writing projects, one of which being the memoir of Kumar Wickramasingha and the story of the Elliott Test Kitchen. As the author of this memoir, Julien will use both personal narrative and in-depth research to create a compelling argument for the solution to rural America’s educational decline - namely, that only through dedicated, passionate community involvement and cultural appreciation will education be able to flourish and heal the rifts in our fracturing society. About Brent Zirkel Brent Zirkel is currently the Elementary Principal at Mary Welsh Elementary in Williamsburg, Iowa, a school of about 650 students. He also serves as the district ELL Director, Migratory Education Program Director, and Preschool Program Director. Kristian shares insights on the value of external perspective, the impact of belonging and engagement on students, and practical steps for principals to start collecting stories that define their school’s identity. The episode emphasizes that when a school’s message is clear and authentic, it fosters community, increases enrollment, and creates a virtuous cycle of pride and participation among students, staff, and families. In this episode of Transformative Principal, host Jethro Jones interviews Erik Francis, an expert in educational leadership and the creator of Maverik Education AI. Francis discusses the role of AI in education, emphasizing the importance of authenticity and critical thinking. Key points include: AI's Limitations: ChatGPT and other AI tools can sometimes produce inaccurate information due to the nature of their sourcing and synthesis processes. Depth of Knowledge (DOK): Francis highlights the need for students to deeply understand their learning, moving beyond surface-level comprehension. He outlines how different levels of DOK correspond to various question types (e.g., "whether" questions indicate DOK 1, while "how" questions indicate DOK 2). AI as a Tool, Not a Replacement: Francis argues that AI should be used as a stimulus for learning, not a source of definitive answers. It can offer suggestions, but educators and students must ultimately use their own judgment and critical thinking skills. The Importance of Authenticity: Francis believes that the future of AI in education lies in authenticity. Educators and students should "be the brain" and use AI as a tool to enhance, rather than replace, their own thinking and decision-making processes. Misinterpretation about DOK and We don’t know the source that chatGPT Is using. OpenAI synthesizing all those hits in Google that gives back information that is not accurate. In this episode, David Schipper, director of the Strategic Learning Clinic, discusses the challenges that students face in reaching their full potential. He highlights the prevalence of SAD (Stubborn Adult Disorder) as a major obstacle and emphasizes the need to address the soft bigotry of low expectations. Schipper argues that learning to read is the number one civil rights issue of our time and stresses the importance of testing all children by age 1 to identify those who may need additional support. He recommends high-impact tutoring and emphasizes the need to put the right emphasis on the right syllable when teaching reading. Schipper also discusses the role of transformative principals in identifying students who are struggling and provides practical tips for educators. The #1 obstacle to helping students become the best they can be - SAD Huge resistance to many ideas. Sold a story that if students would just memorize all the words. Soft bigotry of low expectations Test all kids by age 1. It’s a total mystery why students struggle. High-Impact Tutoring Put the right emphasis on the right syllable. Learning to read is the number 1 civil rights issue of our time. If teachers are taught how to teach, they’ll be more effective. How to be a transformative principal? Test the phonological processing skills of students. Note who is struggling. About David Schipper David Schipper is the director of Strategic Learning Clinic , a position he has held since 2013. David obtained a B.A. in English Literature from Concordia University in 1998 as well as a B.Ed. in Secondary Education (English and History) from McGill University in 2002. After some work as a local teacher in Montreal, David founded 2Torial Educational Centre in 2007. In this podcast interview, Julie Ulstrup discusses the concept of the "Zone of Brilliance," where individuals can create a vision and achieve their dreams. She emphasizes the importance of having a definite chief aim and aligning one's actions, time, and money with that aim. Ulstrup highlights the common problem of educators providing a lot of value but not being compensated fairly for it. She suggests that educators can increase their income by understanding their zone of brilliance, changing their mindset about compensation, and becoming more aware of their transferable skills. Ulstrup also challenges the idea put forth by Simon Sinek that one should start with "why" when setting goals, arguing that teachers should focus on their zone of brilliance and act accordingly. Zone of Brilliance - We help everyone else create a vision and achieve their dreams. Every achievement is a result of a definite chief aim How you see yourself, how others see you, how you spend your time, how you spend your money. We say we value something, but we do something else. It looks like doing nothing. Impact, influence, increase and income. We know it is our zone of brilliance when we feel it inside. How to change your mindset about compensation. Common and chronic problem that educators provide a lot of value and don’t get paid enough for it. Increase is three dimensional - who are we becoming. How we serve on the earth is how we can define ourselves. How much did the US pay out for all the Olympic gold, silver and bronze medals? Teachers do have a lot of transferable skills. Act in your zone of brilliance Simon Sinek was wrong - Don’t start with why Teachers have skills that can work well in other settings. Teachers have always been in sales. Mindset, human-centered part of being an entrepreneur. Five minutes and use the quote by Sarah Blankely “The biggest risk is not taking a risk” - Journal about that for two minutes. “I serve and I deserve” and what does that mean? Venn to Zen. About Julie Ulstrup Meet Julie Ulstrup , the visionary CEO of Women's Brilliance Collective and transformational personal and business strategist for experienced educators seeking their next chapter. Dr. Daris McInnis joins Jethro to explore the complex nature of the reading process and the pivotal role that parents play in building literacy foundations at home. Dr. McInnis emphasizes the expertise that parents bring to the table, urging schools to honor and tap into that knowledge. He challenges the assumptions that parents inherently have everything they need to support their child's learning or that lack of engagement signals disinterest. Instead, he advocates for creating meaningful partnerships with parents, giving them a seat at the table, and understanding the pressures they face, such as time constraints. Throughout the discussion, Dr. McInnis highlights the value of programs like Reading is Fundamental (RIF) and literacy nights, which provide families with tools and strategies to support their children's learning. He also encourages educators to rethink their roles as learners themselves, emphasizing the importance of linguistic expression and understanding students as cosmopolitan intellectuals. Tune in to discover how schools can better engage families in the literacy process and how transformative leadership begins with meaningful, student-centered conversations. Reading process is complex. Starts at home At home start understanding the literacy foundations Parents have expertise, and we need to acknowledge it. Parents' knowledge of how their students’ everyday life impacts learning. Schools should honor and seek that expertise out. Schools don’t honor parent expertise because they don’t have expertise Grandma’s statistics Assumption: Parents have everything they need to support student learning (in the way we do it). Assumption: People have time. Uninvolved or don’t care is not what silence always means Giving them a seat at the table. What do they need from the school district? RIF is a great resource Literacy nights - valuable for many reason Strategies and tools for parents. Linguistic expression How do we rethink about ourselves as learners as well. How to be a transformative principal? Identify a student that a teacher is struggling to reach, then go into the classroom, and have a conversation with that student. Frame them as the cosmopolitan intellectuals they are. Please add your bio here: Dr. Daris McInnis is an assistant professor of literacy in the College of Education and Social Work at West Chester University of Pennsylvania. His research interests include family literacy, reading research, critical literacy, family-school partnerships, and early childhood education. In this episode, host Jethro Jones interviews Mike Cronley, founder and CEO of Class Composer, about how his software helps create equitable classrooms. They discuss the challenges faced by educators in balancing class compositions and how Class Composer addresses these issues. Getting the right kids in the right places in elementary school Focus on behavior and then start overloading based on other characteristics. Rarely changed once the school year starts. Classroom imbalance can impact the school for much longer than just the school year. Teachers are happy with the output. People weren’t starters but they make an impact. About Mike Cronley While some big ideas are born in the boardroom, others are born in the lunchroom. In his 12 years teaching third grade near Denver, Colorado, Mike shared the frustrations of many colleagues enduring inequitable classes – for example, classes having an imbalance of low readers or students with challenging behavior. These imbalances weren’t surprising, given the student placement process was done with pink and blue paper cards. Over lunch one day in 2007, the school’s music teacher was venting to Mike about some unruly students who mistakenly ended up in her class together, even though they were supposed to have been separated based on their disruptive behavior the year before. Wouldn’t it be great, they mused, if there were some software to create class lists and avoid these basic errors? As a self-professed technology geek, Mike started dreaming about the possibility of creating his own solution. That dream grew into an obsession, and he found himself spending evenings and weekends consumed by research – driving his wife crazy. The result was Class Composer, software built on Mike’s tech savvy, his teacher’s perspective, and his commitment to creating positive learning environments. Mike, who received his B.S. in Psychology from the Ohio State University and an elementary teaching certificate from the University of Colorado Denver, is no longer in the classroom, but is an educator at heart who loves making a positive impact on the lives of teachers and students. He lives in Boulder, Colorado with his wife and two poodles, and he loves to ski, bike, and camp with his family, including his college-age son and daughter. LinkedLeaders : You need support.
