This Is Woman's Work with Nicole Kalil

In this episode, we delve into the concept of being "qualified" in the workplace, examining who gets labeled as such, who doesn't, and the underlying reasons. We explore "competency checking"—the practice of scrutinizing individuals' abilities—and how it disproportionately affects underrepresented groups, often going unnoticed or unchallenged. Our discussion aims to redefine qualifications in a fair, equitable, and actionable manner. Our guest, Shari Dunn , is an accomplished journalist, former attorney, news anchor, CEO, university professor, and sought-after speaker. She has been recognized as Executive of the Year and a Woman of Influence, with her work appearing in Fortune Magazine, The Wall Street Journal, Ad Age, and more. Her new book, Qualified: How Competency Checking and Race Collide at Work , unpacks what it truly means to be deserving and capable—and why systemic barriers, not personal deficits, are often the real problem. Her insights challenge the narratives that hold so many of us back and offer practical solutions for building a more equitable future. Together, we can build workplaces and communities that don’t just reflect the world we live in, but the one we want to create. A world where being qualified is about recognizing the talent and potential that’s been overlooked for far too long. It’s not just about getting a seat at the table—it’s about building an entirely new table, one designed with space for all of us. 1 UN Human Rights Committee: Australia responsible for children in Nauru regional processing centre 17:56
Children trying to seek refuge in Australia have been detained on Nauru. They argue that Australia is still responsible for them. Australia made a carefully worded agreement with Nauru to avoid responsibility. If Australia has no responsibility, Australia says it is not obliged to ensure the human rights of these children. Um, okay, weird flex about not protecting literal human children, Australia. The UN Human Rights Committee has found that Australia is responsible, and breached Article 9 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. To read the decision, click here: https://tbinternet.ohchr.org/_layouts/15/treatybodyexternal/Download.aspx?symbolno=CCPR%2FC%2F142%2FD%2F2749%2F2016&Lang=en Euphemisms are very fun. Unaccompanied minor = child, all alone with no parent or guardian…
Very short, sharp episode about the close link between the Roman Empire and Nazism. Why the “Roman salute” explanation is still scary as heck.
Billionaires who fail to denounce nazis and fascists are, you guessed it, bad. In Australia, we do not (as far as we know at this stage) have a fascist with overwhelming political power in parliament. But we cannot ignore what is happening in the US. This not-lawyerly episode discusses one concrete action you can take now to strengthen your community. It is aimed at Australians but may be applicable to listeners elsewhere. Fun fact: many people attribute “hope is not a strategy” to Rudy Giuliani but versions have been kicking around at least since the 1970s according to General Gordon R Sullivan, former chief of staff of the US Army, and the coiner of “hope is not a method”. Acknowledgment of Country. CW: the case that started it all is a high-profile sexual assault matter. Acknowledgement of Country. A not-very-lawyerly episode. My swimming teacher experience and coastal upbringing have given me some knowledge, and I share that with you! Disclaimer: I’m not your swimming teacher (see, I’m still lawyerly). Great resources: https://www.surflifesaving.com.au/beach-safety/rip-currents/ and https://www.royallifesaving.com.au/about/campaigns-and-programs/Water-Safety and your local swim school or surf lifesaving club. Bonus: My voice is soothing and you can use this as a sleep aid. Happy new year!…
