This month, we’re diving into the 2001 BBC Books Eighth Doctor novel, Father Time. Following on from our recent synopsis episode, this is the main event: a full discussion of the novel—what works, what doesn’t, and how it fits into the broader Eighth Doctor era. We also explore the plot, the tone, and some standout characters, including the Doctor’s daughter, Miranda! Before all that, we kick things off with the usual mix of news and short topics you’ve come to expect. Then, after the book chat, we open the mailbag for a bumper listener feedback section—nearly 25 minutes of your thoughts, theories, and reactions. Our listeners are the best. Well dear listener, it had to happen. After appearing with us separately on various podcasts, a long-time and genuine friend of the podcast - Too Hot for TV's Dylan Rees - joins BOTH of us to discuss the BBC television adaptation of Douglas Adams' THE HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY on tonight's episode of ALTERNATE GALAXIES. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy aired between 5 January and 9 February 1981 on BBC2 in the United Kingdom. The adaptation follows the original radio series in 1978 and 1980, the first novel and double LP, in 1979, and the stage shows, in 1979 and 1980, making it the fifth iteration of the guide. The series stars Simon Jones as Arthur Dent, David Dixon as Ford Prefect, Mark Wing-Davey as Zaphod Beeblebrox, Sandra Dickinson as Trillian and Stephen Moore as the voice of Marvin. The voice of the guide is by Peter Jones. Peter Jones, Simon Jones, Moore and Wing-Davey reprised their roles from the original radio series in 1978/80, as did supporting actors Richard Vernon and David Tate. In addition, the series features a number of notable cameo roles, including Adams himself on several occasions. Bob Baker and Dave Martin were a writing partnership that contributed many Doctor Who stories during the 1970s across the Pertwee and Baker Doctors including The Claws of Axos, The Mutants, The Armageddon Factor, and The Hand of Fear. They were also responsible for the creation of K9, who first appeared in The Invisible Enemy and went on to become one of the most beloved characters in the Doctor Who universe. Dave took a quick visit up to Sydney recently, and the 16th of November saw him catch up with Rob, in-person. For this latest meeting, our fun, lo-fi, hotel room recording vibe is back. Strap in for, ‘Rob and Dave Unplugged 4’ where, this time around, the guys canvassed their social media followers for questions about anything and everything! Come and spend some time with the guys, talking everything from favourite movies to why Rob doesn't go to live Doctor Who events. Have a comment? hello@theDWshow.net…
This month we combine a couple of suggestions from listeners and examine Doctor Who adventures that would have made a good yarn to set a regeneration in, versus what we actually got at the end of a Doctor's era. What are our thoughts on this film, its writing, its production, and its ensemble cast including Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen, Liv Tyler, Viggo Mortensen, Sean Astin, John Rhys-Davies, Bernard Hill, Christopher Lee, Billy Boyd, Dominic Monaghan, Orlando Bloom, Miranda Otto, David Wenham, Brad Dourif, Karl Urban, and Andy Serkis, here in 2024? Back in 1996, Virgin Publishing was pumping out Doctor Who 'New Adventures' and 'Missing Adventures' novels every month, which were both very popular ranges with fans. Then it made... this. Who Killed Kennedy is a standalone Doctor Who novel that is very much its own thing. Tonight, we discuss the novel... what it is, what it's about, and what we think of it. Before then, news from the past month including our thoughts on Millie Gibson appearing in season two, and much more. You can contact us anytime via hello@theDWshow.net…
On this Sunday's flagship show, we review the 1996 Virgin Publishing Doctor Who novel, Who Killed Kennedy . We appreciate it might be some time since some of you read it, and many of you might have never read it at all (being a nearly 30 year-old novel!), so this episode serves as a synopsis of the novel, enabling you to brush up on the basic storyline. Take note, this isn't a discussion, and it rattles along at a fair old pace. If you're not up on the first few seasons of Pertwee (and even a few stories that happened before his era), you might miss some of what's going on in this one. But stick with it, and try to get the flavour of what's going on, and we're sure it will benefit you when listening to us talk about the novel on Sunday. See you then! With a new non-fiction Doctor Who book on the horizon, this time looking at the creation of Doctor Who back in 1963, Rob sits down for the third time in the life of the podcast with friend of the show and the book's author, Paul Hayes. Pull To Open: 1962–1963: The Inside Story of How the BBC Created and Launched Doctor Who is available from Ten Acre Films on July 24, 2023. = = = ‘Fresh and compelling… As definitive an account of those early years as I have read’ Toby Hadoke When Doctor Who began on Saturday November 23 1963, few could have guessed that it marked the start of perhaps the most extraordinary story in the history of BBC television drama. But there had already been another story, equally extraordinary yet unseen, leading up to the transmission of that opening episode – the creation of the series itself. Pull to Open explores the behind-the-scenes saga of Doctor Who in 1963, when a chain of events at the BBC brought together a disparate group to launch what would become one of British TV’s best-loved and most successful programmes. It’s the story of why these events happened; the BBC creative culture into which Doctor Who was born; how television drama was made in the early 1960s; and an insight into the people who started this epic journey. Drawing from the BBC’s written archives and new interviews with some of those who were there, including Doctor Who’s first director Waris Hussein and original co-star Carole Ann Ford, Pull to Open is a detailed and comprehensive account of the programme’s path to the screen. Immerse yourself in the world of BBC Television in 1963 and discover how a series which was almost cancelled before a single episode was shown survived to cement its place in the popular culture of a nation. The Doctor Who Show

From time to time, the Doctor Who Show devotes an episode to a series writer. A great chance to talk about numerous diverse episodes, sometimes from totally different eras of the show, only related by the name on the script. In today's episode... Mark Gatiss. Possibly the most 'Marmite' of all Doctor Who writers, especially in the modern era. Fans tend to love and hate Gatiss' stories... but strangely can never agree which stories are meant to go in which column! Stories covered in this episode include: The Unquiet Dead The Idiot’s Lantern Victory of the Daleks Night Terrors Cold War The Crimson Horror Robot of Sherwood Sleep No More The Empress of Mars Plus a number of 'extras' including Gatiss' New Adventure novels, Nightshade, and St. Anthony's Fire, and the 50th anniversary special, An Adventure in Space and Time. Before then we also talk some recent Doctor Who news, including new cast members for the upcoming Ncuti Gatwa era; Davo's wife has written a book; and are there some missing episodes materialising from the ether in time for the 60th? The Doctor Who Show

On May 13, 2023, our Dave travelled up to Sydney to attend the Sophie Aldred fan event, run by our fellow Antipodean podcasters, The Sirens of Audio. In addition to being there to support the return of small, fan-run events in this country, Dave was also tasked by the hosts to conduct an on-stage interview with Doctor Who author, Jon Blum. This was originally to be a joint interview with Jon and his wife, the celebrated Doctor Who author, Kate Orman, however Kate was unable to attend on the day. This podcast is a half-hour discussion between Rob and Dave about the day in general, followed by about half an hour of audio from the Jon Blum chat. As we mention on the podcast, the audio of the Blum interview isn't up to our usual podcast standards, but we're sure you'd rather hear a version of the chat than nothing at all, so we include it here. Enjoy! Tweet us, Facebook us or email us at hello@thedwshow.net…
