×On 8 th May 1945 Victory in Europe was declared. In the UK people poured onto the streets, and from the balcony of Buckingham Palace the King and Prime Minister joined in the celebrations of a hard-won victory over tyranny. But Europe was a continent in ruins. Some regions were on the brink of famine and the threat of Communism was marching west. Having won the war now it was time to secure the peace. Likewise, from the cross Jesus declared a final victory over the tyranny of sin and death. But human nature was still in ruins. As St Paul put it people were still ‘filled with wickedness, evil, murder, strife, deceit and malice.’ Jesus may have won the victory. Now it was time to secure the peace and, as St Paul discovered, that peace was found by individuals turning to Jesus. In the years after the Second World War politicians made bold claims to be able to improve the lives of those they served. In 1957 Harold Macmillan declared that Britons ‘have never had it so good’. But all too often circumstances intervened, and their promises turned out to be empty. By contrast the promises of Jesus to build a peaceful future were based on an empty tomb and, therefore, rather more certain! The post Now let’s win the peace appeared first on Turn the Page .…
On Christmas Day 1859 Thomas Austin, a British ex-pat, gave Australia a gift they have never forgotten. He was missing his old hunting traditions and so asked his family to send him 24 European rabbits that he could breed for hunting. Sadly, he seems to have forgotten that rabbits breed like…well like rabbits. Genetically disposed to flourish in the Australian climate their population grew rapidly. Seven years after their release 14,000 had been killed on Austin’s estate alone. This plague of rabbits became an ecological and environmental tragedy. Their population today exceeds 150 million and costs the government more than $200 million a year to control. In happier news the first Christmas Day gave the world a better gift that has also never been forgotten. An infant who became a man and gathered around him 12 apostles to add to 12 tribes of Israel – 24 in all. This man died on a cross one Friday but then rose again three days later. The tiny community he had established started to grow exponentially. First hundreds, then quickly thousands, then millions and, over time, billions. His name is Jesus and where his followers have authentically heard his voice and obeyed his teaching the world has been transformed for the better. A place for everything and everything in its place. This is the rule by which I try to live my life. It means that I can tell you exactly where things are in my house. This applies to the important stuff like keys, wallet, and passport but also the less important like Sellotape, hole punches, and scissors. So, on the rare occasions when something isn’t where I expect it to be panic sets in. If it’s not where it’s meant to be where on earth is it? This was the case on the first Easter Sunday when the women went to the tomb to anoint Jesus’ body. They had seen where he was buried on Good Friday, and they knew for certain where he would be on Sunday. The place for a dead body is in the grave and dead bodies, as a rule, don’t move. But the tomb was empty. Jesus wasn’t where he was supposed to be, and for a few moments panic set in. But there was a simple reason why he wasn’t in the tomb. As the perfect Son of God death could not hold him. He had walked out of the grave; and when we put our faith and trust in him so can we! Mel Gibson’s film The Passion of the Christ was so powerful that a number of those involved turned to Christ during its filming. One of those was the actress Sabrina Impacciatore who played the part of Veronica, the woman who steps out of the crowd to wipe Jesus’ blood-stained face as he makes his way to the cross. Brought up a Catholic Sabrina had long since stopped practising her faith. Her part required her to look at Jesus, say the words, ‘Lord, permit me’ and then wipe his face and offer him a drink. It is a tender moment in the midst of great brutality. With the jostling crowd it was a difficult scene to capture and required twenty takes to get right. Gradually Sabrina felt that she was no looking into the eyes of an actor but those of Jesus himself and her heart began to soften. She realised that Jesus had suffered because he loved her, and that his words from the cross, ‘Father, forgive them’ included her. Her faith came alive and she returned to following Jesus. As we remember once again the suffering and death of Jesus may our hearts, like Sabrina’s, be softened. He loves us, He died for us and He rose again for us. Stranded in the Atlantic Ocean RMS Titanic was facing her final few hours. Her hull breached by collision with an iceberg she was shipping more water than she was designed to hold and going down by the bow. On board chaos and confusion reigned with some saying everything would be OK with this unsinkable ship, while others scrambled to find room in the lifeboats of which there were not enough. All of this could have been going on in complete darkness if the engineers in the boiler room had abandoned their posts. But they didn’t and their selfless heroism meant the lights were still on even as the ship began her final plummet to the seabed. Their actions no doubt saved many lives. We all need a light to shine to spare us from the dangers inherent in the darkness with which we are so often surrounded in this life. Wonderfully such a light exists. The prophet Isaiah declared ‘The people walking in darkness have seen a great light’, and hundreds of years later Jesus appeared and announced, ‘I am the light of the world’. Hold on to him and no matter what your circumstances, you won’t be struggling in the dark. The post Let the light shine appeared first on Turn the Page .…
On 1 st April 1957 the BBC scheduled an edition of its iconic Panorama programme. The subject was the harvesting of the Swiss spaghetti crop. It was narrated by perhaps the most famous broadcaster of the day Richard Dimbleby. While his serious tones described the process of picking and drying the spaghetti, the film showed a Swiss family bringing in the harvest and then celebrating the crop with a traditional meal. We may laugh now, but at the time many viewers were fooled. Spaghetti was uncommon in the UK at the time and both Panorama and Richard Dimbleby were trustworthy voices of respectability. It just goes to show that no matter how trusted the source we really do need to be sure that what we are being told is true. It’s for exactly that reason that Luke wrote his history of the life of Jesus. He wrote the book for Theophilus and explains that it is based on eye-witness accounts. He says, ‘I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning… so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught’. This is good news. It means we can laugh at talk of a spaghetti harvest but have confidence in the claims of Jesus! The post April fool? appeared first on Turn the Page .…
Two men have been fined and ordered to do unpaid work after vandalising a statue of Paddington Bear. Pronouncing sentence, the judge told them that they were the antithesis of everything the bear stood for – kindness, tolerance and acceptance. While the label on Paddington’s coat reads ‘please look after this bear’, the behaviour of the men in question had demonstrated the very opposite. The two are now said to be extremely ashamed. This time it was the statue of a bear, but all too often we show unkindness to our fellow human beings with far worse consequences. It was Cain in the Old Testament, who, when challenged about the murder of his brother Abel, said ‘Am I my brother’s keeper?’ The answer should have been yes, and the fact that it wasn’t demonstrated how far he was failing to reflect the image of God in which he had been made. Surprising as it may seem being kind doesn’t come as naturally as we might think. More often than not we are governed by our own self-interest. Paddington’s character shows us the way, but we need more than a good example to follow. We need power to change and only Jesus can give us that. In 2019 Edward Spencer-Churchill reviewed the security arrangements for a solid gold toilet at Blenhiem Palace. It was part of an art installation. He announced that it would not be ‘the easiest thing to nick’. Sadly, he was wrong as thieves broke in and made off with it during a raid lasting less than five minutes. Fast forward nearly six years and the thieves have this week been convicted of burglary. Toilets and thieves once combined in some important teaching Jesus gave to his friends. Obsessed at the time with not eating impure foods he pointed out that it’s not what we eat that makes us unclean. While food passes through our digestive system and is flushed away it’s what comes from our hearts – evil thoughts, theft, murder, greed, deceit and the like – that really pollute. And like the thieves who stole the toilet one day we will have to give an account of ourselves. The good news is that Jesus not only pointed out the problem but also provided the answer. He took to the cross all of our sin and wrongdoing and, as the perfect Son of God, paid the price that should have been ours. It’s like they were just flushed away. In a recent interview Lady Gaga admitted that for many years her biggest fear was of being alone. In 2017 she confessed ‘I go from everyone touching me all day and talking at me all day to total silence.’ She said, ‘I think my biggest fear was doing life on my own’. She’s now happily engaged, and those days of loneliness are a thing of the past. But her experience is not uncommon – to be in the middle of a crowd and feel lonely. In Luke’s Gospel we read of a woman who found herself in just such a situation. On the edge of a crowd, she suffered with a health condition that meant she was isolated and alone and had been for many years. The man of the moment, Jesus, was at the centre of the crowd. If only she could get to him perhaps things might change. In her desperation she pushed through the crowd, touched his robe and knew, instantly, that she was healed. Immediately Jesus stopped the crowd and welcomed her. ‘Daughter’, he said, ‘your faith has made you well’. If you are feeling lonely today remember that Jesus is still the same. If you reach out to him he will stop the crowd and come and find you. The post Stop the crowd appeared first on Turn the Page .…
‘It’s going to be a spicy one’. So said Russ Cook, otherwise known as the Hardest Geezer, as he announced his latest challenge – to run the length of New Zealand. He earned his nickname after running the length of Africa in just 352 days – a gruelling journey through sixteen countries over mountains and deserts (not to mention being robbed at gunpoint). Struggling at one point with severe back pain but with no damaged bones, he decided ‘to stop mincing about like a little weasel and zombie stomp road again’. No doubt it will be that brute determination that will propel him along the 3,000km length of Te Araroa Trail when he sets off again in March this year. I’m reminded of the apostle Paul who travelled thousands of miles around the middle east telling people about the good news of Jesus. Along the way he was imprisoned, beaten, whipped, shipwrecked and in constant danger from pretty much everyone. But his determination was extraordinary. He wasn’t a man running aimlessly but, like Russ Cook, had his eye on the prize – the joy of offering eternal life to others. In a final letter to a young friend he wrote, ‘I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.’ Perhaps then the very first hardest geezer! The post Hardest geezer appeared first on Turn the Page .…
When 18-year-old Donovan Shears sent a text message to a number he had just made up he wasn’t expecting a reply. It was 1998 and he had his first mobile phone that could send text messages. So, he made up some numbers and fired off the simple greeting ‘hullo’. One recipient was another 18-year-old called […] The post Call me appeared first on Turn the Page .…
Both outgoing and incoming American Presidents have been generous with their displays of forgiveness. Four years ago, the clear up was in full swing after the storming of the Capitol on 6th January 2020. Some 1,600 people were convicted, some for violent assault. Now Trump has set them all free. Perhaps even more surprising, however, is […] The post Forgiveness for all! appeared first on Turn the Page .…

With Gen Z leading the charge 2024 is going to be another year where the cost of Christmas is loaded onto credit cards. But when did our love affair with credit begin? Back in the 1950’s the Bank of America sent an unsolicited credit card to every one of its 60,000 customers. Known as the […] The post Free credit at Christmas appeared first on Turn the Page .…
You won’t be surprised to discover that we spend a lot of our lives waiting for things. According to some research, we spend on average 20 minutes a day waiting for a bus or train, 32 minutes every time we visit the Dr, 13 hours a year on hold, and 38 hours a year stuck […] The post Worth the wait? appeared first on Turn the Page .…
