For this episode, I spoke with Dr. Justin Haegele about his most recent research around children with visual impairments and their experiences with inclusion in a physical education setting. Dr. Justin Haegele (@Justin_Haegele) is an associate professor at Old Dominion University, an accomplished researcher in the field of adapted physical activity, and a frequent guest on this podcast. For this episode, Dr. Haegele and I had an in-depth discussion about his recent paper entitled "Absent, Incapable, and “Normal”: Understanding the Inclusiveness of Visually Impaired Students’ Experiences in Integrated Physical Education" where he and his research team interviewed several children and youth with visual impairments about their experiences with feeling a sense of belonging and acceptance within their integrated physical education setting. Within this discussion, we also revisited some of our previous discussions about inclusion vs integration and the notion of how we as physical educators may at times do more harm than good for our students with disabilities.
