With the plethora of options out there in the field of data, how do you shape your perfect career? What are the skills to learn and which roles should you aspire? There are the topics Christian Krug, host of the podcast “UNF#CK YOUR DATA” discusses with Eva Murray, self-employed career coach.

While some people claim “I didn’t choose data, data chose me”, usually data careers don’t happen by accident. At least the successful ones don’t.

But what does it take to make such a career.

I’m going to give you the hard answer first: There is no way around a solid technical foundation! Yes data careers include leadership and management roles. A lot of data is business related, but still there is a lot of tech involved. So getting some knowledge in SQL (of Python) just expands your options by a large margin.

Of course, there are not only the backend roles and data visualizations are also a awesome topic. But at some point you should get your hands dirty and at least get a basic understanding of technical concepts and coding.

When you’ve laid that foundation, communication is king. Data teams tend to be in between IT and business. Serving business needs and solving business problems with the tools that IT provides.

Thinking ahead and providing not only numbers and information, but also giving solutions is key. If you then manage to be easy to work with and understand the cultural aspects of communication. You are set to make a quick start.

Wherever you go in data. Deep tech, consulting, requirements engineering, tech vendor, banking and so on. The most important thing is: It is your career and never leave the driver’s seat. Actively forge it. Else others will forge it for you. But not in your best interest, but theirs.

So reclaim the seat!
