On this episode, we talk with Jeremy Puckett, Blood Center supervisor for Lee Health in Fort Myers, Fla., who walks us through the processing and distributions steps. He says that among the pieces of equipment used in the process are machines that look like giant washing machines, and even a device that resembles an alligator jaw.
We also learn that red blood cells — once they're separated from whole blood — will last 42 days at optimal storage conditions. Plasma lasts for up to a year. Skittish about donating? Relax!
