In this very special episode, Susan Trumpler and Melissa Blair talk about what it’s like to work with someone in your family - in particular, their daughters Lindsay Trumpler and Stephanie Blair, who join in on the conversation.

Melissa started her journey with a sales training business she started with her mother. Now she is working with her daughter, Stephanie, in their business Cultivating Sales.

Susan’s daughter, Lindsay Trumpler, has been a business partner in Beyond ROI for over 10 years, measuring the impact of sales training.

These mother-daughter teams let you in on the challenges of working with your family, managing the change in relationship dynamics when you go from family to business partner and co-worker, and figuring out how to stay in your lane. They share the importance of setting and respecting each other's boundaries and recognizing different work styles and how to learn from each other.

Episode Highlights:

04:08 One of the silver linings of covid was, she was finishing up her freshman year in college and I said come home, I’ll give you work to do for the summer and it’s all history from there.

05:53 It’s amazing that someone - at the time, 19 years old, now you’re 20 almost 21 - she gets sales and marketing.

07:08 I was good at a lot of things that she hated, and it was a natural fit, but certainly not an easy fit.

08:25 We had to figure out whose lane was whose. Whose responsibility was this or that. I think there was a lot of stepping on toes for a while.

11:40 I grew up a workaholic. You were of no value unless you worked too much.

12:07 I value my “me” time much more than Susan might. I value moving your body daily and not sitting at your desk for 10-12 hours straight. I make that a priority no matter what my calendar looks like.
