Title: The Greatest Preacher to Ever Preach
Text: Matthew 4:17
Theme: The sermons of our Lord
Introduction: Jesus has just began His public ministry in Capernaum and is about to begin Preaching.
John 21:25 And there are also many other things which Jesus did, the which, if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written. Amen.
read key verse- title
A.Jesus never preached Fables
Fable- False Teaching
John 14:6 "the way, the truth and the life"
- Jesus never preached Flattery
Flattery- Insincere praise to further ones selfish purpose
Rebuked the Pharisees- Luke 11:39-44
Ceremonial cleansing was a religous rite and Jesus didn't do it. When asked about it He rebuked the Pharisees because they had false values and were outwardly religous.
He never watered down the truth so mans ego would not be hurt.
Mark 7- Traditions of men "hypocrites, heart was far from him, they worshipped Himin vain teaching doctrines for the commandments of men.
He preached sin was sin
"evil thoughts, adultery, fornication, mrder."
Mark 9- Fortold His death and Ressurection (nothing flattering about Calvary)
illustration of Naaman.
- Jesus never preached Funerals- When Jesus was on earth there is not a time on the Bible where someone died in His prescence.
Joh 11:25 Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:
Joh 11:43 And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.
verse17- laid in the grave four days. The Jews had an old superstition that you could pray someone alive again within 4 days.
Joh 10:17 Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again.
Joh 10:18 No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father.
Outline: Read Matthew 4:12-17
Three things about the Preaching of our Lord Jesus
- There is Light in His Preaching- v.14-16
Is. 9:1,2
Is. 42:6,7
Around the Sea of Galilee there was a lot of people, but they were very, very wicked.Because of Roman Empire many people migrated to Galilee. This is where Jesus spent His childhood.
- His Light Shown - v.16,17
"sat in darkness"
"sat in the region of the shadow of death"
"saw a great light"
- His Light Snubbed - Matt 11:20,21
Snubb- rebuff or ignore
Mat 11:20 Then began he to upbraid the cities wherein most of his mighty works were done, because they repented not:
Mat 11:21 Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works, which were done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.
John 1:4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men.
Joh 1:5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.
- There is Love in His Preaching- v.17a
- His Love Demonstrated- Repent
This is not watered down Preaching
Illustration of the sin problem
- His Love Denied- Repent- to turn away
This is why a lot of people rather believe in un-truth. There is an Authorty to Chrstianity. And that Authority commands us to Repent.
They saw His mighty Works, His Mighty Wonders, and heard His Mighty Words. But they refused His love because of that word- Repent
III. There is Lordship in His Preaching- v.17b
"kingdom of heaven it as hand" The Kingdom of Heaven was at hand in the person of the King. They could not have the Kingdom of Heaven without the King.
Kingdom of Heaven- reigns of the heavens over the earth
Established on earth through Israel
Jesus is Messiah
- His Lordship to Redeem- He's Prophet, Preist, and King
Col 1:14 In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:
- His Lordship to Receive
Not willing that any should perish
Thru His name there's wondrous power,
Power to redeem, making sinners clean.
By His pow'r He cleansed the leper,
Opened blinded eyes, caused the dead to rise.
What a lovely name, the name of Jesus.
Reaching higher far, than the brightest star.
Sweeter than the songs they sing in heaven.
Let the world proclaim, what a lovely name.
Joh 6:37 All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.

Conclusion: Those in darkness in Galilee had heard the truth but did little with is. What do we do with the truth of Christ?
