As for the relatively new jewelry option, man-made diamonds extremely fast flood the market. More and more people prefer them when making the choice of accessories in many segments. We used to buy man-made diamonds as an original gift, an extravagant fashion element that makes our individualism speak aloud. But even the hottest lovers of diamonds born in the laboratory were not in a hurry to buy them for engagement. They did not do this previously. Yet, they do this today.
Website The Knot, a wedding planning resource, published a report claiming that every fourth couple prefers an engagement ring featured with man-made diamonds. Experts believe that an environmental conscious is a core reason for such a choice. The vast majority of Millennial or GenZ-ers, who now are in their “engagement age”, are highly concentrated on global safety. For them, every smallest initiative or idea that minimizes the effect of human activity on the Universe matters a lot. So, the ethical origin of man-made diamonds, which does not require mining, is a convincing argument when choosing between diamonds created by man and gemstones avulsed from the heart of the Earth.
We asked Thiery Silber, the founder of Madestones Company, which was the first jewelry trader in Europe betting on man-made diamonds, whether the environment-friendly aspect indeed matters for young people of the current epoch or its meaning is highly overestimated. He confirmed that just a few decades ago when buyers challenged the product’s origin, demand for man-made diamonds was low, especially if talking about choosing them as an engagement or wedding option.
Only later, when the industry has succeeded in proving quality, namely 4Cs certification, we do notice the start of changes. Yet, true interest in man-made diamonds was evoked when producers started to launch sustainable initiatives. Taking carbon from the air or ashes, discovering the ways to lower energy and water consumption, moving towards zero point of CO2 print – all this has brought the idea of man-made diamonds’ being safe. It was a sign for people who appreciate ecology. One can easily notice the surprising coincidence. A few years ago CO2 neutrality is heard and just a few years ago couples’ preferences start changing in favor of man-made diamonds.
Sustainability is a significant push factor for Millennial but it is not the least. Observers call the price one of the “for” arguments. Being 30% cheaper than natural diamonds, laboratory-grown gemstones save the money which is so needed to organize a wedding ceremony or have a honeymoon somewhere in a nice place.
Moreover, many jewelry giants foster the interest of consumers in man-made diamonds by declaring their value and choosing them as a central line in business activity. They set the trends and trendy options are always more popular.
