In what felt almost like a must-win game, Bob Melvin and the San Francisco Giants opted to use ... Erik Miller and Spencer Bivens in perhaps the highest leverage pitching situation of the season?! Indeed, the Melvin and the Giants' front office appear to have shot themselves in the foot based on how yesterday's ninth inning unfolded.

Taylor Rogers hadn't pitched in a week. Jordan Hicks was available. Camilo Doval didn't need to be optioned. All three have experience as very good closers in MLB, yet none were used when it mattered most. Miller, who has a tendency to walk people, issued two walks and set up a bases-loaded situation that was inherited by Bivens, a rookie with hardly any MLB experience. Predictably, the situation unraveled, the SF Giants allowed four runs, and they lost 6-2 to the MLB-worst White Sox.

The SF Giants' offense shouldn't be let off the hook, either, as they scored zero runs in five innings against one of MLB's worst bullpens. They managed just two runs in the game, which will make it tough to win no matter what happens on the pitching front. Thankfully for the San Francisco Giants, the Braves lost yesterday, so they remain 3.5 games back in the wild card standings. The Giants now face a struggling Mariners team, a good Brewers team on a road trip, followed by a three-game home set with the Marlins. The schedule is very tough after that, but it's one last opportunity to take advantage of a couple of struggling teams while the Braves' schedule remains relatively tough.
