One of the coolest sports stories of the young new year was Golden State Warrior Pat Spencer being guarded by his younger brother, Memphis Grizzlies rookie Cam Spencer, in a game on Saturday, Jan. 4.
It was the latest crescendo of a pair of incredible athlete journeys that were heavily influenced on the lacrosse fields at Boys' Latin (Md.) and Loyola University Maryland. After winning the Tewaaraton Award in 2019, Spencer played a year of basketball at Northwestern and has since worked his way through the NBA G-League to sign a two-way contract with the Warriors.
Meanwhile, Cam — who also played lacrosse for the Lakers — started his college basketball career at Loyola, then transferred to Rutgers before finishing his career as a national champion with UConn in April. He was selected with the 53rd overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft and made his debut with the Grizz in November while also logging minutes (and success) with the G-League Hustle.
Though the Spencers' focus is squarely on maximizing their NBA dreams, they also have an eye on life after basketball, which is why they've invested in a startup called Chillshark. Founded by Pat's BL teammate Keegan O'Connor, a 2014 Under Armour All-American who played at Maryland and High Point, Chillshark is a device that can convert any device into a cold plunge.
Recorded on Dec. 3, Pat, Cam and Keegan joined IL's Terry Foy to discuss their journey to that point, as well as the merits of cold therapy and how O'Connor plans to go about building the business.
