"The basic premise of the event is that hunters hunt rattlesnakes from the surrounding environment all across West Texas, and bring them into the roundup for the weekend. And during the roundup, these snakes are kept in a pit and then, one by one, beheaded and skinned in front of in front of audiences." - Elizabeth MeLampy Elizabeth MeLampy is a lawyer dedicated to animal rights and protection, and her passion for this work shines through in her latest book, Forget the Camel, the Madcap World of Animal Festivals and What They Say About Being Human . To research the book, Elizabeth traveled across the country, immersing herself in a wide range of animal festivals — from the Iditarod dog sled race to the rattlesnake roundup in Sweetwater, Texas. Elizabeth examines these festivals as revealing microcosms of our broader relationship with animals. Whether it's rattlesnake hunts, frog-jumping contests, ostrich races, or groundhog celebrations, these events reflect the ways humans use animals to express cultural identity, community pride, and historical traditions. Yet beneath the pageantry and excitement lies a deeper question: Is our fascination with these spectacles worth the toll it takes on the animals involved? With compassion and insight, Elizabeth invites readers to consider whether there’s a more ethical and empathetic way to honor our stories — one that respects both animals and the traditions they inspire. Please listen, share and read, Forget the Camel. It will be released on April 8th, 2025. https://apollopublishers.com/index.php/forget-the-camel/…

My podcast series would be used to tie classroom material into current events. The first episode that I created deals with the constitutional law history of the commerce clause of the US constitution. It examines 4 supreme court cases, their impact and then finalizes by tying it back to current events - specifically the new health care law. The name of the episode would be "The Commerce Clause". The music came from freemusicarchive.org. https://www.dropbox.com/s/2rd3fgxnb0qzwem/Baker_Ryan_513_podcast.mp3…

The topic of my podcast is transferring from a two-year community college to a 4-year college or university. I chose a person who I know is articulate to interview. The topic of this particular podcast is the process of completing your degree at a community college and then transferring to a university. My goal in this pod was to highlight areas that would help our present students to start thinking about their future and transferring. Esther, the student in the recording brings up excellent tips, advice and real world experiences that will prove invaluable to current students. One of the problems I encountered was that the person I interviewed was leaving on a trip back to her country of Panama and I had one shot at the podcast. I taped it and then went back and edited in AUDACITY. Not having the ability to ask her to re-record , it was more difficult than I had imagined to edit, amplify areas, paste in the music, re-record a portion that did not come out well with my voice and integrating back into the podcast. I also went the safe route and used Creative Common music, I would of loved to use Springsteen or the Beatles but feared prosecution, heavy fines and up to 5 years in the slammer. For those who choose to listen, I hope you enjoy!…

Hi Guys, This is my very first real podcast. I decided to create a format where kids are interviewed. As a teacher I think it important for children to speak their minds and have people listen. I will be interviewing several children in the next few weeks about their thoughts on their home life, school community and their view of the world! I hope you enjoy the first of the series called, Kickball! This is my son Micah helping me out by being my first interviewee! Link Dana…
This podcast (which already has a logo), produced in Portuguese by Artesanato Educacional , covers creative and innovative topics on Education Technology and Distance Education. This episode discusses how (and if) it is possible to combine customization with collaboration in Distance Education, that is to say, individualized studies and interaction with peers and teachers.…
Introduction I worked with Lana Grover on my Edutainment podcast this week, and it was a wonderful experience. I think we got ahead of ourselves with this project (more on that below), but in doing so we learned a lot. The podcast can be found at this link . Edutainment Tonight The series, Edutainment Tonight, is a weekly independent podcast focused on exploring the products and services that help us to fuse education and entertainment. Most shows are broken into 3 parts: 1) Introduction and discussion Here Lana and I updated the audience with events and activities of the last week. This gives us a chance to keep the audience up to date on what we are working on, but also provides us with an opportunity to let the audience know about upcoming shows. 2) Product reviews For this episode, we reviewed Psyko Audio Carbon headphones and SoundCloud. In addition to reviewing the products, we discussed how the products could be used for edutainment purposes. 3) Mailbag Here we receive feedback from our listeners and answer their questions. For this first episode, we reached out to a gaming community for questions. In the future, we will include questions posted on the blog or on the YouTube channel. For a copy of the show notes, go to my learning log here: http://www.douglasbushong.com/edtech/?m=20120318 This is actually the second episode to a show idea that started in EdTech 597: Introduction to Edutainment. However, it is the first episode using the current format. If this podcast continues, it will likely continue in the format used for this episode. Struggles with the Format Going into this project, I think Lana and I were aware of two things. First, it would be a long-form show. Because of it's conversational, unscripted nature, the show is much easier to listen to for a longer period of time, and we did not feel that the show would evolve properly within a 10 minute constraint. Second, we knew that we wanted to try a video podcast format. Lana and I each set up multiple cameras, and tried to synchronize them with the PrettyMay call recording. Here is a short list of the problems that we faced: 1) For some reason, the PrettyMay call recorder on my desktop did not like working with the surround-sound headphones. Or, rather, it would record what was being said, but it would not allow me to hear Lana on the other end. For this reason, we had to switch to my netbook and hope that it wouldn't crash. 2) When PrettyMay did record the call, it actually made a noise come through on my channel. The PrettyMay call recorder records the call on two separate channels: me on the left ear, and Lana on the right. This make it a lot easier to edit the channels individually. This was fortunate, as everytime Lana started to speak, it played the first part of the sound on my channel as well. It wasn't hard to edit out these stray noises on my channel (I think Skype detected them, and corrected them accordingly), but it was time consuming. 3) Along the same lines, I erred when I first edited the file. Instead of simply muting the line when these stray noises occurred, I deleted them. When I later attempted to mix the audio and video, the alignment was way off. Thinking that it was simply a problem of the rate of the audio file, I decided to "stretch" the audio in premiere to match the video. This made matters worse; not only did it misalign, but now the error between the audio and video varied forward and backward from moment to moment. This required an enormous amount of post-production editing. 4) One of my co-host's cameras did not record. This wasn't that big of an issue, as we had the other recording. 5) When the final production was almost ready, I realized that I was getting a hissing noise in the audio portion of the video file. I could not continue with this, so I had to start over. Ultimately, we decided to go with just the audio, which is now available on iTunes. Before the end of the course, I hope to post the video of the show on YouTube. I think it will be a really interesting show.…

solving the Portfolio Puzzle I decided to base my podcast on something I am currently going through right now---building the portfolio for my Master of Educational Technology degree. I thought this topic might be of interest to others in the class as well since this is something we will all be experiencing at some point in the next little while. Although it is a little tongue-in-cheek at times, it is a fairly accurate description of my experiences as I have been going through this process. I generally followed the suggested layout for the podcast with a musical introduction, 4 topics separated by brief musical interludes and a musical conclusion. The topics I cover include in this first podcast entitled Getting Started on My EDTECH Portfolio: 1. Feeling Overwhelmed 2. Compiling the Components 3. Getting Organized 4. Mapping the Artifacts Other podcasts in the series include: Setting up the Website Writing the Reflection Paper Planning and Creating the Reflection Video Putting It All Together Submitting for Faculty Review…

This podcast series is titled “Tech Trek”, designed for my middle school technology class. The overall theme is to cover various technology related topics that connect to this age group and their lives. My focus is to use real life scenarios and add in a sprinkle of humor to keep them engaged in the given topic. The topic of focus for episode one is Copyright Law. I focus in on illegal music downloads, using copywritten media in projects, Fair Use Law and the Public Domain. I decided to use an “advice line” type platform to make for a more engaging format and flow. The final segment of this podcast is called “You Be the Judge”, where we examine the legality of different theoretical scenarios. The hope is that my students will find the podcast fun and engaging enough to keep listening for the full 20 minutes! Tech Trek Episode #1…

Having been affected with Rheumatoid arthritis for the past 25 years I thought I would create a podcast to inform others of what the disease is all about. There is a great deal of misunderstanding concerning arthritis and I hope to educate people as to the different forms of arthritis and hopefully share others experiences. In our first episode we discuss the difference between Osteo and Rheumatioid, the onset of the disease and what to look for, and a brief history of some of the treatments. In episode #2 we will be discussing the pain associated with RA and what can be done in an effort to reduce or eliminate it. I hope this podcast will be informative and enjoyable for all listeners. My podcast series, Math Journeys, is planned to be helpful insight for middle school math content. The first episode covers adding and subtracting negative numbers, including review of absolute values and positive and negative numbers on a number line. It roughly follows the standard suggested format, though it is shortened to meet the under ten minute requirement. There is an introduction, song jingle (one of my own songs), and four distinct topics, one of them being the review. The three main content topics are adding a positive and negative number, adding two negative numbers, and subtracting two negative numbers. The episode ends with a summary and gives an overview of the next episode. Math Journeys: Episode 1…

The purpose of this podcast is to share with educators methods in alignment with the National Educational Technology standards to develop skills identified for 21st century learning, this skills include critical thinking, communication, collaboration and creativity and innovation. One of the methods to develop these skills in the classroom is through a project based learning model. This first podcast I discuss the background to PBL, research support and examples of PBL. I also mentioned that I was to include a podcast from Edutopia, but it was not available in ITUNES at this time, the video is accessible through this link. The rest of the podcasts in this series would update listeners on other stages and tools available to increase critical thinking, communication, collaboration and creativity.…

Here is the pilot episode of the Tech-teach Podcast , where we discuss technology, education, and all of the stuff in between. I really enjoyed doing this project, and it has caused me to have a greater appreciation for podcasters who can crank out content that is polished every day! This took a log time to do and it is just shy of 20 minutes! I feel like, were I given ample time, this could be a fun side project, but I really dont think I have the time to dedicate to something like this aside from classroom-specific podcasts. Very fun. This episode covers education news, tech news, and a best-practices tip: outlining. In the premiere podcast episode of Write On!, I provide an overview of the four types of journalistic leads - the news, feature, review, and opinion. Each article is different, and each requires a unique strategy. I talk about the chief aspects of each type of lead, and then provide actual examples from our school newspaper, Spotlight . Click HERE for the link. Write On! will feature writing tips, advice, and examples from a variety of genres, including newspaper, academic, and creative writing. Future topics could include "crafting thesis statements,""concluding with authority," and "the art of analysis." I had a lot of fun recording this, channeling my own Mark Hunter from Pump Up The Volume . I was surprised how quickly I was able to fill the time. For future podcasts, I may try to limit the number of segments, or work at being more concise with my language and ideas. This was definitely a great learning experience, and I have a new reverence for the work of the radio personalities who entertain me on my way to and from work!…
