If you did, the 44 lb elementary school student with light brown hair and sweet blue eyes would likely say to you something like this: “Hi, I’m Louis. Let’s be friends!” A stranger to nobody, Louis was a free spirit who walked around his neighborhood like the mayor, often chatting up adults instead of playing with his peers. While Louis should have been safe to do so in his busy urban neighborhood, things took a dark turn when Louis reported that he had been sexually abused by a couple, who he only knew by their first names. According to Louis, they threatened to make him disappear if he ever told anybody. And then, sure enough, months later he was gone. Send us a text In January of 2002, a group of four land surveyors were working in a lightly wooded area in Harris County Georgia. According to the crew, they were all walking in the same direction about 50 feet apart and carrying on conversation. A 20 year old named Christopher was last in the vertical line and the third person in line asked Christopher a question and got no answer. When he turned around he was gone. The search for Christopher provided confusing and concerning clues, but despite the direction those clues pointed in, law enforcement theories were – well, interesting, I’ll say. Send us a text On an early Wednesday morning in 1992, a husband and father called home to check in on his family. His wife was typically on her own in the morning, managing the routine of caring for their preschooler while getting their elementary-aged son up and moving and out the door while he was at work. Appreciating that she had her hands full, he liked to call to make sure the older boy was getting out of bed and on the bus okay. His first call went unanswered, which he found odd but he dismissed his worry. But the feeling just nagged at him, so a little while later he called back. This time someone did answer, but the voice on the other end wasn’t his wife. It was the voice of a three year old who simply said “Mommy’s bleeding.” Those two words would jumpstart an investigation into one of the most gruesome and senseless murders the area has ever seen. Send us a text It was an ordinary October day in 1978, and a utility worker named Steve was laying cable on a remote highway in Lyon County, Iowa. Just a short distance off the road he spotted what he thought was a mannequin. But as he got closer, he soon realized that he had come across something far worse. It was the partially clothed body of a dead woman, and it appeared she had been there for a while. It would take 27 years for this woman to get her name back: Wilma June Nissen. Identifying her would open the pages to Wilma’s story – chapters upon chapters of more tragedy and hardship than most people face in a whole long life. But Wilma experienced it all before she ended up dead in that ditch at just 23 years old. There are pages still missing from her book – and her daughter is now trying to find them, to learn her mother’s full story, and to fight for justice for a woman she never got the chance to know. Send us a text The release of this episode, on February 10th, 2025 will mark a devastating milestone. The 35th Anniversary of possibly the most horrific crime the state of New Mexico has ever seen. Early on a Saturday morning, the community of Las Cruces New Mexico would have its sense of safety and serenity shattered forever, when two gunman entered a family-owned small business and gunned down seven people execution style. Miraculously, there were survivors, including a brave 12 year old girl who found the courage to call for help and save others, despite being critically wounded herself. While this case has had a bit more news coverage than some of the others cases I have covered, it hasn’t amounted to answers. In fact, there have never even been named suspects. My hope is that in honoring the lives lost and changed forever in this senseless act of violence, the conversation will continue and someone who knows something will come forward. Send us a text A computer programmer is running month end inventory at an empty office park on her day off. At least, she thought it was empty. The next morning her colleagues reported to work and found the building flooded and signs that a fire had been started around the woman's desk. Further examination would reveal blood at her workspace and the next few days would uncover one ominous clue after another. Despite a prime suspect emerging, her body has never been found and nobody has ever been charged in her case. Send us a text Ann Arbor Michigan, 1994. College junior Renee Welka and a friend are returning home to her apartment complex after a night out. Shortly after parking her car, a man emerges from the shadows and pulls a gun, shooting Renee once in the back through the window. Renee tries to drive away but doesn't make it out of the parking lot, dying from her injuries. Her passenger quickly identifies a man in the crowd as the shooter, but charges don't stick. To this day, her case remains unsolved. In this weeks episode, I not only discuss Renee's tragic case but also the controversial topic of eyewitness misidentifications. On a Sunday morning after a hearty camping breakfast next to the fire, the moms went to the boathouse to wash dirty shoes, the Dads went to get more firewood and the kids played. Send us a text Just three days after Christmas of 1964, in the quiet town of Garfield Heights, Ohio a sixteen-year-old girl was getting ready to meet up with friends. When her friend shows up at their agreed upon time, she does not answer the door. Later that afternoon, the teen's father would come home to a horrific discovery – his oldest daughter dead on her bedroom floor, the victim of a vicious homicide. As detectives dig into her life, they find out from those closest to her that she had recently become a stalking victim – something that they didn’t even really have a word for back then. This stalker has never been identified, nor has her killer, leaving the possibility that they weren’t one in the same.
