The Aspiring Solopreneur

Ever feel like you're building your solo business one guess at a time? In this episode, Carly and Joe pull back the curtain on the Solopreneur Success Cycle, the foundational framework behind their new book Solopreneur Business for Dummies . From defining your goals (hello, Step Zero!) to tweaking, refining, and reimagining your business as it grows, they break down the entire cycle designed specifically for one-person businesses. It's not a lecture, it’s a roadmap with a healthy side of real talk, laughs, and lessons you can apply right away. Whether you buy the book or not (but, like, you should ), this series is your shortcut to building a business that actually works for you. Okay, this might be the craziest offer we’ve ever made. We’re giving away a solopreneur platform that normally costs five hundred dollars a year … For twenty-five bucks. And not for a month, not for a year… forever. All you have to do is pre-order our new book: Solopreneur Business for Dummies. When we first went solo, we thought we could just Google our way through it. But the advice out there? It was built for startups with teams and money, not someone trying to do it all themselves. We kept thinking: “There’s gotta be a better way.” So we made one. LifeStarr Premier is the system we wish we had back then: the tools, the strategy, the community, all in one place. Go to book.lifestarr.com to lock it in. This deal goes away when the book drops, October 6, 2025, and it’s not coming back. Pre-order the book. Upload your receipt. You’re in. For good.…

Shut your eyes and think of a stereotypical salesman. If you’re like me (Carly), you’re imagination may have immediately transported you to a car dealership, or a person with a briefcase ready to give you a pitch. That’s how I always used to think about sales, and frankly, why I was always turned off to that profession. But then, over time, I started meeting people who revolutionized the industry, and turned my original connotation into one that thinks of people who can be relied on as trusty sources of helpful information. Tom Martin, is one of those people. Tom is a seasoned expert in turning conversations into customers, with 30 years of experience revolutionizing sales processes for companies ranging from startups to global brands. His insights have been featured in Advertising Age Magazine and Forbes, and he has spoken at major industry conferences like MarketingProfs and Content Marketing World. He is the author of The Invisible Sale , where he explores the science of Propinquity in relationship building and sales. He also has a signature program called Painless Prospecting, which emphasizes respectful, trust-building sales strategies over aggressive tactics. "I’ve tried everything and spent so much on my marketing efforts but nothing is working!" We unfortunately hear this from far too many solopreneurs. It is so frustrating and so incredibly difficult to stand out these days. Just when you think you’re getting the hang of something, an algorithm seems to change and you’re back at the drawing board. What’s a person to do? Well, we recently spoke with Victoria Hajjar to try to answer that. She is the founder of Ugli Ventures and specializes in helping businesses go from 6 to 7 figures in revenue. An entrepreneur herself, Victoria knows what it is like to be the person wearing many hats, with little to no support. We speak with a lot of solopreneurs every week, and have started to see a pattern with some of the most successful ones: they have accountability partners or accountability groups. Because this has come up so much recently, we want to pull an episode from the vault that we recorded over a year ago, fittingly called: Expert Advice For Holding Yourself Accountable On Your Solo Journey. In this episode we had on The Accountability Pit-Bull,” Anne Bachrach, who says that having someone to answer to on a regular basis about your progress is a powerful motivator. While all solopreneurs will benefit from listenting to this episode, this is absolutely a must-listen for people who are just getting started. We asked all the questions that we wish we would have known when we started our own businesses and our guest, Nolan Bradbury, answered all of them thoroughly. Take 30 minutes to listen to this, you'll be SO glad you did. Questions we asked include: What role does the mindset of a solopreneur play in the financial success of their business? What are the common factors that prevent business owners from achieving their financial goals? What do business owners, specifically solopreneurs, often overlook, either in the beginning of a business or when they're trying to scale to the next level when it comes to the financial health of their business? When we think of a traditional entrepreneur and company, we think of financial reports and accounting data when a person talks about business finances. Are these types of reports necessary for solopreneurs and what should solopreneurs pay attention to? Why should business owners place value on accounting/bookkeeping? When it comes to the previous topic, what should they be mindful of if they do it themselves and what should they look for if they decide to outsource? What makes for a good relationship with your accountant/bookkeeper? Any tools or systems you'd recommend solopreneurs invest in? Allow us to give some background, because this is a show unlike any we've done before. Joe has been a fan of Toon on Netflix for awhile which is a Dutch comedy about a reclusive, socially awkward jingle composer who must navigate the nightmarish world of show biz after a viral video skyrockets him to fame. Fame aside, the main character is relatable to many solopreneurs, so Joe wanted to have the actor who played him on the show. Thinking I (Carly) was only going to watch the first few episodes to prep for this interview, I turned it on, and one week and two seasons later, I had completed the series, and could totally see why Joe was so into it (and has watched the series three times). It's. Awesome. In this episode, Joe and I sat down with star and co-creator of the show, Joep Vermolen, to discuss his journey as a solopreneur himself, and how he went from that to having a show on Netflix. The story is wild. He's witty, authentic (a theme for the episode), and charming and led us through one heck of an interview. If you're a solopreneur, somebody who wants to be inspired, or just a person wanting to hear a good story, or sneak peek into the world of television, this episode is for you. Enjoy! Joe and I (Carly) have not historically been fans of social media. I haven't posted on my personal accounts in years (aside from LinkedIn). However, knowing it's a necessary evil for our business, we decided to embark on a mission to not only enjoy it, but do it right. A few months back we interviewed Shelley Goldstein, who actually convinced us that social media could be something to look forward to if we changed our mindset, and she was right. Once we had the motivation, we had to finese our approach to optimize our efforts and increase success...and that's where we are today, in this episode, with Karlyn Ankrom. In this show, she answers pressing questions for solopreneurs, such as: What are 3 tangible things solopreneurs can do today to move the needle on their social media efforts? So many people measure vanity metrics. What should solopreneurs actually measure and how often? Can it actually impact ROI quickly? How does a solopreneur inject personality into their posts? People often forget to use CTAs in their posts. What are some good CTAs to use to increase engagement and do they change across platforms? How do you best advise solopreneurs to straddle the line between their personal and professional lives on social media? Do the lines get blurred with relationship building on social platforms? For people who only serve their local community, should they be doing anything differently? Plus so much more. Be sure to tune in! These show notes are going to be a bit different than those in the past because, honestly, this show is different than any other we've done before. It's rare to be completely unfamiliar with a topic you're interviewing somebody about, but we did it, and it was fascinating. In this episode, Dr. Rob Scranton discusses the Infinite Banking Concept and why it is so effective. He has personally achieved financial success using this strategy without compromising his quality of life, sacrificing experiences, or adopting a frugal lifestyle. With this concept, you're able to build wealth by protecting and preserving your money while it's still growing - without using a traditional bank. What?! We literally had to ask our guest if this approach was legal since it makes a lot of sense but so few people have heard of this. Instead of working longer hours, taking on more risk, or losing control - how most people think wealth happens - many people use this 200-year-old strategy to keep and grow more of their money. If true wealth is what you want, you should use the IBC too, and Dr. Rob can help. This episode so truly mind-blowing and a game-changer for solopreneurs. You need to listen to this. So, the fact that we got Jay Schwedelson, I repeat, JAY SCHWEDELSON, to answer these questions is basically just the coolest thing ever. He addresses topics like: If email marketing is actually necessary for solopreneurs (his answer surprised us) The biggest mistakes people make when it comes to email Common myths about email marketing How to create a subject line that increases open rates Where solopreneurs should focus their email efforts given they have limited time and resources How to grow email lists Email marketing predictions for 2024 (and why you need to think about the election even if your business has nothing to do with politics) And so much more! In the episode, we describe Jay as a cup of coffee. His enthusiasm and upbeat personality are so contagious and we can't wait for you to listen to this episode!
