Gwen Shamblin has gone down in history for her promotion of a very specific Christian lifestyle. One that included harsh discipline in daily life. The kind of discipline that caused eating disorders and child abuse in members of this church. 10:38-17:10 Daniela discusses her experience growing up with ties to Gwen’s teachings—unbeknownst to her. 17:11 A lifestyle and brand built on being thin and sin-free emerges. Gwen’s adjusts her life to better suit her image for the brand she was building in the church. 18:38 The church had money from all the businesses that sprang up around it to support this specific lifestyle. Gwen's daughter suffers a great loss when her son passes away from SIDS, rather than support, she was met with shame and guilt due to the toxic teachings. Gwen’s son Michael does not fit the mold and is ejected from the picture, his presence onstage was no longer required. Michael holds bitterness against the church from his traumas. 21:24 Ex members speak up about their experiences in the church. The fear-based control allows for Gwen’s rise to the top, prophet-tier. 22:17 Members are negatively impacted by the rules of the church—a murder is linked to the church however it’s only fuel for her mission as she defends her teachings. 8 year old Josef Smith was found dead, having been beaten and left in a box for hours in the Smith family home October 2003. Rather than show remorse, Gwen and her church backed the family and paid for lawyers. This is what got the public’s attention, placing this cult in the spotlight of the media. The group played it as “their church being persecuted”. 26:03 Joe Lara plays the role of Gwens husband almost too well and they are rolling in their “blessings” when their lives end in an accident. As she enjoyed her peak, she fell from grace, along with her empire. What will the future hold for the church? Abi rants on the situation in the United States, :50- 3:35. Abi talks about how she feels on her journey towards activism in the current climate. The women discuss how feelings seem to get in the way of the message and the struggle of thinking outside of yourself when you’re uncomfortable, but now is the time to be uncomfortable. Birmingham, Alabama went from being called Magic City to being called “bombingham”. 27:42 Abi reads an NPR article: Dynamite hill was an area that was bombed so many times it garnered its nickname. Barbara Nunn, a friend of Denise* correction from what was said* 53:37-55:28 Barbara and her mother share the time she dreamt there was blood coming out of the 16th St. Baptist Church and she felt something awful would happen, warning her son not to go there. 1:01:42 Freedom riders, commentary by David J. Vann, former mayor of Birmingham, AL. Upon arriving, the freedom riders were greeted with a beating from their opposers/oppressors. There was a photographer there to take photos and he was also beat, his camera was taken and the lense was shattered. The camera was tossed with the film untampered with, allowing for the photos to be shared in the paper, exposing the violence. 1:05:07- 1:05:53 Burning churches, commentary by Rev. Reggie White and Raiford “Ossie” Davis. Although white supremacists continue to burn down churches following this bombing that shook the nation, the community continues to build. Abi and Daniela catch up a bit and get a little messy. Topic introduced at 9:38 Kyron Horman was only 7 when he went missing. Seemingly vanishing without a trace, leaving his belongings on his desk on his final day seen at school. His stepmother Terri seemed very involved, even posting his photo on this day at the science fair, it wasn't long before she was under the microscope. NSFW material @38:38-40:51 It was a very scandalous aftermath, especially with the involvement of the infamous Dr. Phil show. The family remains hopeful for any information to be revealed on the whereabouts of the, now, young man since his disappearance 14 years ago. If you or someone you know has any information about Kyron Horman’s disappearance, please get in touch with the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office at (503) 988-0560 or submit a tip online at tips.fbi.gov . Abi begins with a serious and personal message. After 7 minutes, the Halloween fun begins with the introduction to an early internet icon, Slender Man. They brush up on the ARG basics discussed in the original Internet Casserole of 2020. The origin of the terrifying creature known as the Slender Man is revealed. The early internet provided a playground for creatives to post to forums, and Something Awful’s challenge of June 2009 changed the horror community forever. The women go through some archives where slender man’s lore unfolds as children are going missing and animals are being mutilated. A quick intermission for some thoughts on AI and UFO abductees. Participants build a dark and fascinating backstory, even reaching as far as BC times, proving a more convincing origin of the monster.
