GESPONSERT
"The basic premise of the event is that hunters hunt rattlesnakes from the surrounding environment all across West Texas, and bring them into the roundup for the weekend. And during the roundup, these snakes are kept in a pit and then, one by one, beheaded and skinned in front of in front of audiences." - Elizabeth MeLampy Elizabeth MeLampy is a lawyer dedicated to animal rights and protection, and her passion for this work shines through in her latest book, Forget the Camel, the Madcap World of Animal Festivals and What They Say About Being Human . To research the book, Elizabeth traveled across the country, immersing herself in a wide range of animal festivals — from the Iditarod dog sled race to the rattlesnake roundup in Sweetwater, Texas. Elizabeth examines these festivals as revealing microcosms of our broader relationship with animals. Whether it's rattlesnake hunts, frog-jumping contests, ostrich races, or groundhog celebrations, these events reflect the ways humans use animals to express cultural identity, community pride, and historical traditions. Yet beneath the pageantry and excitement lies a deeper question: Is our fascination with these spectacles worth the toll it takes on the animals involved? With compassion and insight, Elizabeth invites readers to consider whether there’s a more ethical and empathetic way to honor our stories — one that respects both animals and the traditions they inspire. Please listen, share and read, Forget the Camel. It will be released on April 8th, 2025. https://apollopublishers.com/index.php/forget-the-camel/…

×In this episode we talk about the importance of managing our expectations of our rescue dogs.
In this episode, I chat with dog trainer and behaviourist Anthony De Marinis about why our dogs behave differently with different people. I asked Anthony to join me for this episode because I noticed that my dog, Rosa, has been behaving very differently when on walks with me versus when she’s with my husband. Anthony explains why this happens and why some dogs can display aggressive behaviour when out with one person and not another. We discuss what we can do to address this and some mistakes most of us don’t even realise we’re making. As always, I hope you enjoy this episode! In this episode, I want to have a chat with you about how YOU feel. We talk about settling your rescue dog on this podcast a lot. It's what it’s all about. But now that I’ve had my dog Rosa for 8 months, I realise the importance of talking about our emotions as humans. Once your rescue dog has settled in, you're probably going to start seeing some behaviour changes and not all of them are easy to manage without professional help. And some behaviours can be really stressful for us as the humans in the relationship. So in this short episode, we talk about what to do if you're feeling emotionally overwhelmed. If you ever need to chat, feel free to reach out to me via email nihal@rescuetails.co or on Instagram @nihal_and_rosa.…

In this episode, I invited behaviourist Angie Cook back to the podcast to talk about reactivity. We chat about why some dogs become reactive or sensitive to other dogs and what to do about it. Angie explains that our dogs often give us signals that they are uncomfortable well before they get anywhere near an approaching dog. We talk about how to read those signals and respond to them to avoid the reaction in the first place. We also chat about some of the behaviours that dogs naturally do that we as dog parents would prefer they don’t like rolling in dirt, barking or eating poop. Angie explains how suppressing a dog’s natural behaviours can in some cases lead to reactivity so we need to find a balance between managing behaviours and trying to stop them altogether. Angie is a certified Dog Behaviourist and a certified Family Dog Mediator with the Dog Door Behaviour Centre in North Carolina. As always I hope you enjoy this episode. Thinking about adopting a rescue dog? Or have you recently adopted one and are struggling to help him or her get settled? You’re not alone! It can be really stressful for dogs and their human companions in the first few days, weeks and even months. When I brought my dog Rosa home, we had a really tough start. She was too scared to come inside the apartment and slept by the front door for the first few days. She was scared of pretty much everything including cars, people, other dogs. This is quite common with rescue dogs. But fast forward 6 months later and she’s as happy as can be! So in this episode, I want to share some of the lessons I learnt and the 6 things you must do to help make the transition as easy as possible for your new furry friend. www.rescuetails.co…
