In this episode, I chat with the wonderful Moira Hechenleitner about how we can help our dogs overcome separation anxiety. Moira is one of only 200 Certified Separation Anxiety Trainers (CSATs) in the world. She graduated from Mayor University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2007, in Santiago, Chile and has a postgraduate in Animal-Assisted Therapy. Moira is a founding board member of the Chilean Association of Professional Dog Trainers (APDT Chile). She has spent the last 12 years offering consultation services to pet owners, and teaching courses to dog trainers. Moira is a speaker on the topic of Separation Anxiety, giving seminars internationally in English and Spanish. We also talk about why some dogs will rip apart the trash as soon as their guardian goes out even if they’ve eaten. Kristin is a certified veterinary technician and force free dog trainer. She has extensive experience and training in dog and cat anaesthesia, surgical nursing, nutrition, behaviour and rescue work. She is an avid horse lover and trains her horse with force free methods, as well. Kristin has a strong belief in taking a holistic approach to animal care and feeding, and supports keeping animals in a biologically appropriate manner. How to Support Your Dog if They're Reactive on Walks and the Mistakes to Avoid 46:05

In this episode, I invited behaviourist Angie Cook back to the podcast to talk about reactivity. We chat about why some dogs become reactive or sensitive to other dogs and what to do about it. Angie explains that our dogs often give us signals that they are uncomfortable well before they get anywhere near an approaching dog. We talk about how to read those signals and respond to them to avoid the reaction in the first place. We also chat about some of the behaviours that dogs naturally do that we as dog parents would prefer they don’t like rolling in dirt, barking or eating poop. Angie explains how suppressing a dog’s natural behaviours can in some cases lead to reactivity so we need to find a balance between managing behaviours and trying to stop them altogether.
