“I used to be the largest dairy consumer on the planet. I used to eat so much dairy and meat. The more that I looked into the dairy industry, the more that I saw that it was the singular, most inhumane industry on the planet, that we've all been lied to, including myself, for years. I always believed that the picture on the milk carton, the cow standing next to her calf in the green field with the red barn in the back was true. It’s certainly the complete opposite.” – Richard (Kudo) Couto Richard (Kudo) Couto is the founder of Animal Recovery Mission (ARM), an organization solely dedicated to investigating extreme animal cruelty cases. ARM has led high-risk undercover operations that have resulted in the shutdown of illegal slaughterhouses, animal fighting rings, and horse meat trafficking networks. Recently, they released a damning investigation into two industrial dairy farms outside of Phoenix, Arizona supplying milk to Coca-Cola’s Fairlife brand. What they uncovered was systemic animal abuse, environmental violations, and a devastating betrayal of consumer trust. While Fairlife markets its products as being sourced "humanely," ARM’s footage tells a very different story—one of suffering, abuse, and corporate complicity. Despite the evidence, this story has been largely ignored by mainstream media—likely due to Coca-Cola’s massive influence and advertising dollars.…

We all know Lincoln Riley: the head coach, the play-caller, the quarterback developer. But do you know how his work ethic was formed? How his father taught him that no detail is too small? Or why he’s savoring the small wins as he rebuilds USC? If not, today’s episode of the Y-Option Podcast , presented by our founding partner 76, is the perfect listen. I’ve been around college football for 25 years. As pressure mounts, revenue grows, and realignment dominates headlines, it’s easy to forget the human beings behind the programs - those who lead, call plays, and develop young athletes. And when it comes to head coaches and quarterbacks, it’s easy to focus on salary, job title, or recruiting rankings. But the truth is always deeper. Today’s conversation brings you into the “why” behind Lincoln Riley’s leadership - his upbringing in Muleshoe, Texas, the influence of Mike Leach, the lasting impact of his dear friend Dave Nichol and much more. As a fellow small-town transplant drawn to the big-city lights, Lincoln and I talk about what it means to now call Los Angeles home and what he enjoys when he finds time off the field. When I first started coaching at USC in 2005 under Pete Carroll, one of the most fascinating dynamics I noticed in L.A. was the tension between external vs. internal reality . Players are often told by the outside world that they’re elite, destined to dominate. Internally, though, they may be struggling - learning the playbook, adjusting to a demanding environment. That’s natural in a sport as developmental as football. But at USC, that disconnect can be amplified, especially in the current landscape of college football. Coach Riley and I explored when he first noticed that, and how he helps his players deal with it and the lessons learned early on at USC. Finally, we delve into his quarterback room. He’s coached a range of personalities, and there’s no single way to mold them. Think about it: from Baker to Kyler to Spencer to Caleb to Miller to the current room at USC. It’s full of such dynamic personalities and all so different. So I had to ask: How do you actually talk to that position? If you’ve followed my podcast, you know my only rule: ask questions I don’t already know the answers to. And this episode taught me a lot - about Lincoln Riley the small-town kid with principled parents, Lincoln Riley the head coach at USC, and Lincoln Riley the human being. I hope you enjoy getting to know him as much as I did. Much love, and stay steady,Yogi Executive produced by Jim Thornby, field produced by McKenna Keil, filmed by Liam Brennan, edited by Victor Ren. As spring football heads to the final weekend, today’s episode of the Y-Option podcast - presented by our founding partner 76 - takes a deep dive into the 2025 NFL Draft plus a preview of the Washington Huskies' Spring Game. While Shedeur Sanders’ slide to the 5th round dominated headlines, we celebrate Cam Ward’s rise from the FCS to the #1 pick, breakdown Quinn Ewers’ journey from a “can’t-miss” high school prospect to the final QB selected, and weigh in on the dynamics in the Browns’ quarterback room. Also in this episode, Jim Thornby and I discuss: * Oregon’s school-record 10 draft picks and why after doing the Ducks’ Spring Game, I think Dan Lanning is just getting started when it comes to producing NFL talent * Ashton Jeanty’s fit in Las Vegas, why the Raiders are our new favorite NFL team, and why I was hoping Arizona Wildcat Jonah Savaiinaea would end up there too. * Tight end battle: Colston Loveland vs. Tyler Warren - who ya got? * The “Servite to the Top 10” pipeline, featuring now Browns DL Mason Graham and now Panthers WR Tetairoa McMillan. * UCLA’s defense turning out pros under Ikaika Malloe - it's time to give them their due. * The growing power of the B1G and SEC in the draft — plus, what this year’s NFL Draft might have looked like before conference realignment. Finally, I’m off to Seattle for Dawgs After Dark . After completing my deep dive on UW, I believe the 2025 Huskies could be a sleeper in the Big Ten. Year 2 under Jedd Fisch features a roster with over 70 players who have only ever played for him. While 2024 was a tough season, the return of dynamic QB Demond Williams Jr. gives the Dawgs a shot at making real noise. Yes - I said it. Plenty more to come this weekend, and be sure to tune into Big Ten Network on Friday night — it’s going to be an electric evening on Montlake. Imagine growing up dreaming of playing quarterback in college football, betting on yourself, and then turning that dream into reality. Fast forward a decade, and you're calling plays for one of the most explosive offenses in the nation, wearing the colors of one of the most iconic brands in all of sports and coaching two of the most experienced quarterbacks in the history of college football. That’s the 30,000-foot view of Will Stein’s football journey. Today on the Y-Option podcast, presented by our founding partner 76, Oregon Ducks offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Will Stein joins us to share the insights and lessons learned throughout his remarkable path in the game, as well as a breakdown on the 2025 Oregon Ducks offense. As someone who also walked-on in college football, I’ve always been drawn to others who’ve taken that same leap. Will’s story of walking-on at Louisville has become legend in Kentucky. His father was a walk-on too, and that grit and relentless work ethic clearly runs in the family. Those traits earned Will a starting role at quarterback for the Cardinals and led to him becoming a 2023 Broyles Award finalist as the Ducks' OC. What’s stood out most to me in getting to know Will, is his deep commitment to family, his passion for the craft, and the discipline that keeps him fully present each day. This episode will resonate with every athlete chasing a dream and every coach grinding before sunrise. His wisdom inspires belief, and his football IQ is a masterclass in growth mindset and high-performance leadership. Draft Day + QB Thoughts Speaking of success—the NFL Draft kicks off tonight, and we’ve got you covered at Y-Option . I’ve been calling it the “Elite Backup QB Draft,” and I think that label will prove true by Friday and Saturday. One prediction: Tyler Warren is my pick for the most consistent playmaker and the closest thing to a sure thing. And when Cam Ward hears his name called as the #1 overall pick, let’s give him a standing ovation. Just six years ago, his father, Calvin, was cold-calling Division III schools looking for an opportunity for his son. Talk about inspiration. How Great Is Ball indeed! Portal Mayhem & College Football Talk What’s going on in college football? The portal has opened, chaos has ensued, and it feels like jerseys are being retired far too soon. In today’s opening segment, Jim Thornby and I bring thoughtful takes to three major storylines lighting up the airwaves: * Nico Iamaleava and what might be college football’s first-ever trade. We dive into why it’s a win for UCLA and what it means for DeShaun Foster’s roster. * Cal Bears, Ron Rivera, and the Portal – Somehow Berkeley is both chaotic and calm. And both can be true. * Retiring Jerseys in Boulder – There’s been plenty of debate around Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter. While both are incredible talents, the timing of retiring their jerseys might actually do them a disservice. We explain on today’s podcast. I’m headed to Eugene for the Ducks spring game, live on Big Ten Network, alongside Y-Option alums Guy Haberman and Kenjon Barner. Dan Lanning’s squad has lost plenty of talent to the NFL, but this roster still boasts future stars. Tune in at 1 PM PST as we break it all down. As always—much love, and stay steady. — Yogi This episode was executive produced by Jim Thornby and edited by Victor Ren. This podcast is a Best Coast Media production This is a public episode. "How much of the game is mental... and how much are you training it?" That simple question from Dr. Michael Gervais, the world’s leading high performance psychologist, rang in my ears back in 2011. Its impact has echoed through my life ever since. Today, Best Coast Media is proud to welcome back Dr. Gervais to the Y-Option podcast, presented by our founding partner 76. In a wide-ranging conversation, we dive into the heart of college football. From navigating the transfer portal to becoming a millionaire at 19, from what Athletic Directors should prioritize when hiring a head coach, to mastering the pressures of high performance as the stage gets bigger. We also have a powerful, heartfelt exchange about youth sports. Put simply: this episode is fire . If you believe in the mental game - or even if you're just curious - pull out your journal. There are gems worth capturing. Back in 2009, I met Dr. Michael Gervais. As the son of two therapists, I’ve always believed in the power of mindset and mental skills. Two years later, during the 2011 NFL Lockout, we shared stages around the country alongside leaders like then-Seattle Seahawks Head Coach Pete Carroll, Nike Executive Matt James, and author Kevin Carroll. We traveled the nation, speaking to high school coaches about building a philosophy. We made memories. Hopefully, we made an impact. But there’s one moment I’ll never forget. Dr. Gervais would ask a question we’d all heard before: “How much of the game is mental?” No matter the region, the answer was the same: “90%.” Then he’d follow up: “How much time do you spend training the mental game?” Again, the answer was consistent—and disappointing: “Less than 10%.” Fast forward to today: Dr. Gervais is the leading voice in high performance psychology. He’s spent decades coaching the best in sport, business, science, and the arts. His work with the Seattle Seahawks is legendary, he’s been an integral part of our Elite 11 quarterback development for the past 18 years with his company and podcast Finding Mastery is a must listen for all seeking to unlock their potential within. Since 2016, he’s joined my podcast once a year. Every time, I walk away a better man - a more connected father, an inspired husband, a more present broadcaster, and hopefully, a better friend. My hope? This conversation lands with you too. And helps you get just 1% better, especially when it comes to your mental game. Much love and stay steady,Yogi P.S. This week we will take a deep dive into the Oregon Ducks with their Offensive Coordinator Will Stein in advance of broadcasting their spring game, as well as share thoughts on the current college football transfer portal, the turnover at Cal and retiring numbers in Boulder. It’s Game Week! Okay, not a real game, but a spring game . And I’m on a flight to Columbus, Ohio to call my first ever game at The Horseshoe for Big Ten Network. Spring football always brings excitement. It’s a time of hope, opportunity, and fresh beginnings for every player on the roster. For the Ohio State Buckeyes, this spring is about the 2025 team beginning to write their own story following a thrilling College Football Playoff championship run. The energy around the program is electric, and this weekend gives us a first glimpse of what’s to come. On today’s Y-Option podcast , presented by our founding partner 76, we dive into a full preview of the Buckeyes. I break down critical position battles and explain why I believe Ryan Day’s squad is primed for another CFP run. And here’s a spoiler: it’s not just because of their talent-rich roster - it’s the competitive culture Day has built that could be the difference maker. One of the young men immersed in that environment is freshman quarterback Tavien St. Clair , a hometown kid who grew up less than an hour from Ohio State’s campus. Now he’s living his dream, wearing scarlet and gray this spring. Tavien and I sat down last summer at the Elite 11 Finals in Los Angeles, and in today’s episode, you’ll hear that conversation—his journey, his mindset, and the legacy he hopes to build. Reflecting on that conversation reminded me of how special the Elite 11 experience has been for me over nearly two decades. Back in 2009, my first year on the Elite 11 staff, the MVP was Jake Heaps . That class also featured Devin Gardner, Chandler Whitmer, Blake Bell, Nick Montana, and others . Meeting those athletes when they were 17 years old gave me a window into the unique world of top-tier quarterback prospects - a world filled with pressure, passion, and unpredictable journeys. Now heading into my 17th year with Elite 11, we’ll share the same message with this year’s class that we gave to the ‘09 group and that we spell out in the best-selling book 5-Star QB : “The only thing that’s guaranteed is that your path won’t go exactly as you envision it.” Looking back on that 2009 class, that truth has played out in so many ways: * Jake Heaps transferred three times before a run in the NFL and is now a head coach in high school & the head coach of Elite 11. * Devin Gardner played both wide receiver and quarterback at Michigan and now shines as a broadcaster with FOX Sports. * Chandler Whitmer played at Illinois and UCONN and now serves as the QB coach at Indiana and in my eyes, is a rising star in the coaching ranks. * Blake Bell won three Super Bowls - as a tight end . * Nick Montana went from Washington to Tulane and today, he’s the co-founder and CEO of his own company. Every one of them, like every Elite 11 QB since, imagined a long NFL career. And while not all had the career of Tom Brady or Jared Goff, they each carry incredible stories, filled with grit, growth, and perspective. It’s a reminder that behind every 4 or 5-star ranking is a real human story. And here at Y-Option , we’re committed to telling those stories and shining a light on who these young athletes are vs who they are told they should be. Hope you enjoy today’s episode featuring Buckeye signal-caller Tavien St. Clair - and as we evaluate their talent this Saturday in their spring game, let’s all remember that each of the players also have a story worth sharing. In my 20 years living in Los Angeles, I’ve noticed a pattern. If you grow up on the West Coast, there’s always a pull to return to the Pacific time zone. For Oregon State quarterback Maalik Murphy , coming back West wasn’t what he initially envisioned as one of the top quarterbacks in the Class of 2022 out of Serra High School in Gardena, California. But after stops at Texas and Duke, the gifted QB has found his way back, now leading the Oregon State Beavers. With spring ball in full swing across the country, we’re excited to welcome Maalik to the Y-Option podcast for the first time, presented by our founding partner 76 . Oregon State football has always been built on successful quarterback play complimenting a strong run game with a tough defense and an incredible fan base. Now, in Year 2 under Trent Bray, the Beavers are in position to make some serious noise out West. I still remember my first trip to Corvallis. It was 2006, my 2nd year coaching at USC. We rolled into Reser Stadium as the No. 3 team in the country, only to leave with a 33-31 loss and the sound of chainsaws ringing in our ears. That game wasn’t my first introduction to the Beavs, though. I had already faced them as a player in the 2002 Insight Bowl while starting for Pitt. We won, and freshman Larry Fitzgerald became a household name that night . But what stuck with me was Oregon State’s identity - tough, disciplined, and relentless. Fast forward to today, and the man leading the Beavers is a familiar name . Bray was a linebacker on that 2002 team and now holds his dream job as Oregon State’s head coach. And this offseason, he might have landed his dream quarterback. When the Pac-12 reshaped itself last season, skeptics doubted whether the Beavers could land an elite quarterback in the transfer portal. But Beaver Nation proved them wrong. Coach Bray, offensive coordinator/QB coach Ryan Gunderson, and the Oregon State staff made their pitch, and one of the hottest names in the portal chose them . As Maalik shared with me on Y-Option, he’s never been happier, or more confident. Hearing that was special. Maalik Murphy is the type of leader young quarterbacks should look up to - a model of resilience and perseverance. We hope you enjoy today’s conversation. And to those of you in our Y-Option paid community - thank you for your continued support. Back to spring ball film study! Ever met someone who just makes the room feel right? Someone who can blend into any crowd, be the ultimate teammate or wingperson, and put others at ease while making them better? I’m sure a few names come to mind as you read this. And as you listen to today’s episode of the Y-Option podcast with Daniel Jeremiah of the NFL Network, presented by our founding partner 76, you’ll get that same feeling. Daniel - or “DJ,” as he’s known in the industry - is a true master of his craft. As the lead voice on NFL Network during the NFL Draft, a constant presence in football media via his podcast Move The Sticks , and the LA Chargers radio analyst since 2018, DJ thrives in every environment. It makes sense. He was once a dual-threat quarterback who transitioned into media after an injury at Appalachian State set him on a new path. A chance encounter during that time changed his career trajectory, leading him to where he is today. DJ and I go way back - over a decade. We’ve done annual home-and-home podcasts on Move The Sticks and Y-Option , sharing a passion for football and the people who make the game great. In today’s episode, we take a trip down memory lane, break down this year’s QB class, and discuss why adversity often leads to success. We also dive into the NFL Draft prospects of Cam Ward, Travis Hunter, Shedeur Sanders, Dillon Gabriel, Tetairoa McMillan, and Ashton Jeanty. Plus, DJ shares powerful insights from 49ers QB Brock Purdy, on the toughness of Justin Herbert, and handicaps the AFC West - aka the Pac-10 from the early 2000s - under Pete Carroll, Chip Kelly, and Jim Harbaugh. I have no doubt you’ll enjoy today’s conversation and I bet you’ll walk away feeling like you just hung out with one of the coolest and most insightful football minds in the game. While DJ is the elite voice of the NFL Draft, what I admire most is his humility, discipline in chasing what truly matters, and ability to elevate those around him. Be sure to catch him and his colleagues live from Green Bay on April 24-26 as the 2025 NFL Draft kicks off on NFL Network. As spring football heats up across the country, there’s some big news to report: * Coach Prime’s Historic Extension : Deion Sanders has signed a five-year, $54 million extension to stay at Colorado through 2029. While his 13-12 record may not seem extraordinary, his impact is undeniable. He has sparked a national - and even global - resurgence of the Buffs brand. The proof? Colorado’s season ticket revenue jumped from $13M in 2022 to $31.2M in 2023, they trend every time he has a press conference and this April the Buffs will, once again, pack Folsom Field for their spring game. Coach Prime continues to redefine what’s possible in college football. And I’d imagine he will be in the news a little on NFL Draft night as well. * Syracuse & Colorado Joint Spring Practices Denied : Not surprisingly, the NCAA shut down the idea of Syracuse and Colorado holding joint spring practices. While denied for now, expect the landscape to evolve as we move toward 2026, with more teams looking to collaborate. Jim Thornby and I discuss this during the preamble to my conversation with DJ and make a case for joint practices, just not like you might imagine. * Stanford Makes Big Moves : The Cardinal have named Frank Reich as interim head coach for the 2025 season. Given Stanford’s unique recruiting challenges, this hire brings immediate stability. While they could have pursued a long-term solution, GM Andrew Luck likely prioritized continuity, choosing a coach he knows well—Reich coached Luck in 2018 with the Indianapolis Colts. Did they get it right? Let us know @Y-Option on social media as we had a long discussion about this strategy as well on today’s podcast. I met Coach Reich at a Super Bowl event a few years ago and he left a lasting impression. I imagine Stanford’s roster will feel the same way and I do not anticipate a mass exodus to the portal. Additionally, Stanford hired Alden Mitchell as the interim Athletic Director. Having known Alden for over a decade from our time at the Pac-12 Networks, I can say this: she’s competitive, sharp, and fully committed to this role. The next 4 months will shape Stanford’s football program for the next 5 years. Their success in adapting to the modern college football landscape hinges on the decisions they make now, and with Andrew Luck steering the ship, I’m optimistic they’ll get it right as a good Stanford squad is a great thing for college football. Spring has officially arrived, and with it, most college football programs have kicked off or are about to begin spring practice. As I’ve often said, spring ball is one of the most critical times for an athlete . This year it’s even more pivotal, with the s econd transfer portal window opening in late April, giving coaches a crucial opportunity to evaluate their rosters and address key needs. For the Washington Huskies , this spring marks a significant phase in Jedd Fisch’s 2nd year at the helm. With new faces, young players stepping up, and 2 new coordinators, the program is rapidly evolving. Deep Dive on UW with Christian Caple No one is more plugged into the day-to-day happenings at UW than Christian Caple , founder of On Montlake - the go-to Substack for in-depth, sourced reporting on Washington Huskies football. This week, Christian joins the Y-Option podcast, presented by our founding partner 76, to break down the latest from Montlake. Having covered the Huskies since his college days during the Tyrone Willingham era, Christian has been immersed in every snap of Washington football for over a decade. In our conversation, he shares: ✅ His journey building On Montlake ✅ The passion behind UW’s fan base ✅ How Jedd Fisch has built the current roster ✅ The development of QB Demond Williams Jr. ✅ The new structure of UW’s front office in today’s college football landscape Why I’m High on the Huskies Personally, I’m bullish on the future of UW. I’ve known Jedd Fisch since 2009 , when we both met in Seattle while interviewing for roles with Pete Carroll’s Seahawks staff. Now, in his 2nd season with the Huskies, Fisch is leading a much-improved roster and coaching one of the most dynamic dual-threat quarterbacks in the Big Ten - at least in my eyes. That might sound bold, considering Demond Williams Jr . has yet to win a game as a starter. But having known him since high school and Elite 11, I believe he has the tools to be a game-changer on Montlake. More to Explore We hope you enjoy our detailed spring preview of UW , and if you’re looking for insights on college football this spring, these past episodes are for you: 🏈 What’s happening at Stanford? 🏈 B1G quarterbacks in 2025 🏈 Marcus Arroyo’s journey to Coordinating ASU to the CFP 🏈 Former UW head coach Kalen DeBoer’s transition to Tuscaloosa If you love college football and are seeking a lens on the game from the West Coast we've got you covered at Y-Option.com through the draft and spring football. Tuesday morning, Stanford football GM Andrew Luck released the following statement: "Since beginning my role as General Manager, I have been thoroughly assessing the entire Stanford football program. It has been clear that certain aspects of the program need change. Additionally, in recent days, there has been significant attention to Stanford investigations in previous years related to Coach Taylor. After continued consideration it is evident to me that our program needs a reset. In consultation with university leadership, I no longer believe that Coach Taylor is the right coach to lead our football program. Coach Taylor has been informed today and the change is effective immediately." Y-Option: College Football with Yogi Roth is a reader-supported publication. The Power of a Coaching Sabbatical Years ago, I learned that Nike offered sabbaticals to employees after 10 years of service. It made perfect sense - stepping away allowed them to recharge, gain new perspectives, and pour into their families. In the coaching profession, I’ve always believed sabbaticals should be the norm. Every coach I’ve met who has taken a year off, whether by choice or due to job circumstances, has experienced tremendous growth. Pete Carroll famously reinvented his coaching philosophy during his year off. Chip Kelly, Dan Mullen, Urban Meyer, and Bill Belichick all spent time in TV roles before returning to head coaching jobs. These high-profile examples highlight individuals that went from head coaching job to another. Today’s Y-Option Podcast, presented by our founding partner 76, is with Arizona State offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Marcus Arroyo. After an extensive coaching career in both college football and the NFL, Marcus found himself on an unexpected “sabbatical” in 2023 following his time as head coach at UNLV. Instead of viewing it as a setback, he saw it as an opportunity for personal and professional growth. Marcus, a Broyles Award finalist in 2024, has coached standout quarterbacks like Josh McCown, Mason Rudolph, Nick Mullens, Justin Herbert, and most recently, Sam Leavitt. In December 2019, he achieved a lifelong dream when he was named head coach of the Rebels. Just months later, COVID-19 changed everything, forcing him to navigate unprecedented challenges. Fast forward three years, and his time away from the game would reshape his career. During his sabbatical, Marcus built a structured calendar to maximize learning. He visited top programs, including the LA Rams, LA Chargers, NY Giants, Texas Longhorns, and Utah Utes. He redesigned his entire playbook, a process that played a pivotal role in ASU’s rise to a Big 12 title and a College Football Playoff berth in 2024. Inside the Episode: * In our conversation, Marcus and I dive into his mentors, his “why,” and the profound impact of his sabbatical. He shares what truly matters most, his nonnegotiables for quarterback play, how Sam Leavitt thrived under Kenny Dillingham at ASU and the math needed to fill the shoes of All-American Cam Skattebo. Of course, we also talk about 4th-down decisions and the mentality behind calling big-time plays in critical moments. More from Y-Option: * Beyond my conversation with Marcus, Jim Thornby and I continue our deep dive into the quarterback position as the Big 12 returns 10 of the conference’s top 11 leading passers from last season, including Arizona’s Noah Fifita, BYU’s Jake Retzlaff, and Kansas State’s Avery Johnson. * Additionally, I reflect on my time in Boulder with Coach Prime and the Colorado Buffaloes while speaking at the Nike Coach of the Year Clinic . As always, we are incredibly grateful for the continued support of Y-Option as we pour into this newsletter and podcast during the offseason. To believe in oneself is a powerful thought. We've seen it drive elite athletes for centuries. It's been the foundation of one of the most successful shows in recent history, Ted Lasso . And for over 25 years, I’ve heard quarterbacks use that word - belief - time and time again. At my core, I trust that the best coaches, players, and performers must face moments of adversity. Hundreds of them. They must stare it in the eye, welcome it, and compete through it. We all have our own moments to reference. And if you’re a quarterback, you likely have a few that stand out. It’s such a defining trait that we use it as a core pillar at the Elite 11 when evaluating QBs. Every single NFL coach or GM I’ve ever spoken with about a prospect asks about it. Bottom line: If you want to elevate in life - or under center - when adversity shows up, you better believe you can find a way through it. Former Minnesota Golden Gopher quarterback Max Brosmer is a blueprint of that mindset. He joined the latest episode of Y-Option, presented by founding partner 76 , to break down the ‘why’ behind his success. I was introduced to Max through Seth Makowsky, an elite mindset coach and the founder of Poison Pawn . Seth has trained some of the top quarterbacks in the nation through chess, using a unique approach to developing their mental game. After visiting with Minnesota head coach P.J. Fleck and co-offensive coordinator/QB coach Greg Harbaugh Jr. this past fall, it was clear that Max was a special soul. A player whose work ethic stood out in my 25 years around the quarterback position and in the lengthy coaching careers of both Fleck and Harbaugh Jr. He’s also a gamer. I was on the call for back-to-back wins for Minnesota this season against USC and UCLA. In both games, with the outcome on the line, Max met the moment. After you listen to our conversation, it won’t surprise you why he delivered when his best was needed. Now, Max is on his path toward the NFL Draft. Ahead of his Pro Day this week, he took time to share some of his core principles as a competitor, the impact of the Minnesota coaching staff on his development, and his experience in the draft process. He also gave some insight into his former team’s QB room as spring ball in Minneapolis kicks off this week. (Spoiler: He did the interview from Drake Lindsey’s apartment.) If you’re unfamiliar with Max’s journey, here’s the quick version: He was a 2-star recruit out of Georgia who’s only offer was to New Hampshire, ranked the 255th overall QB prospect in the Class of 2019—the same class that produced Bo Nix and Jayden Daniels. Think about that for a second. Max was ranked 255th at his position in the entire country, and in six weeks, he’ll be on an NFL roster! Safe to say that Ted Lasso would be impressed with his personal belief. Max went on to star at New Hampshire, overcoming injuries and adversity along the way. Through it all, Max never flinched. His maturity and discipline became defining traits. Once his football acumen caught up to his work ethic, he made his dream a reality - playing college football in the Big Ten. For high school quarterbacks and college players chasing a dream, this is a must-listen conversation. And if you’re curious about what it’s like to play for Coach Fleck and Coach Harbaugh, our discussion paints a vivid picture that might just inspire you to visit their facility. Speaking of learning, today’s Y-Option discussion before our interview with Max focused on the quarterback position in the Big Ten for 2025. After diving into depth charts, film on new transfers, and incoming freshmen, my focus settled on the returners in the deepest league in the nation. What should Year 2 look like in the same system with the same staff? If you’re on the QB path, be sure to check out our conversation with Mark Sanchez on what allows a quarterback to succeed in the NFL. It’s one of my favorite episodes from Season 1 of Y-Option . I’m on my way to Boulder for the Nike Coach of the Year Clinic, and I’ll be sharing insights on the Buffs, Elite 11 in LA, and spring ball as it ramps up nationwide. Be sure to subscribe to Y-Option’s newsletter for all our content this spring. Much love and stay steady. If you love college football, you know the voice of Todd Blackledge - today’s guest on the Y-Option podcast, presented by our founding partner, 76. Growing up in Pennsylvania, a few things were constant: Friday night high school football, postgame pizza with the team, and Saturday afternoons in front of the TV watching college football. My friends and I dreamed of playing in massive stadiums at places like Pitt, Penn State, and Notre Dame. As life has unfolded and I’ve traveled the world, I’ve realized that wherever young athletes grow up, this ritual remains the same. The same was true for today’s guest, Todd Blackledge - college football analyst for Big Ten Saturday Night on NBC and Peacock. I grew up watching highlights of Todd’s career at Penn State, where he led his team to a National Championship over Herschel Walker’s Georgia squad in the Sugar Bowl. Later, as a fan of the game, I came to recognize his voice every Saturday in the broadcast booth. I’ve admired his work for decades, and when I learned he had also worked alongside Ted Robinson , I knew he had come from the “School of Ted” - a mentor who has shaped so many of us in the craft of broadcasting. In our conversation, Todd reflects on: * When he first fell in love with football and how a conversation with the late Joe Paterno on a park bench helped him navigate early adversity in his college career. * His 30+ years in the booth , the evolution of the game, and the common thread that ties college football together amid constant change. * His take on the new-look Big Ten , now an 18-team powerhouse after its first season. * One of the most unforgettable finishes of the 2024 season —the wild, unpredictable ending between Ohio State and Oregon, a game he called alongside Noah Eagle in Eugene last fall. Finally, as I reflect on our conversation - and the many I’ve had with Todd over the years - one thing stands out: his humility. In a sport that’s constantly evolving, he remains focused on celebrating the game, bringing passion and insight to every broadcast. I hope you enjoy today’s conversation with NBC Sports college football analyst Todd Blackledge, presented by our founding partner, 76. Y-Option: College Football with Yogi Roth

It’s a B1G week here at Y-Option both with our guests and on the news front. Thanks to our founding partner 76, today’s guest is the founder of Breneman Media and host of the “Next Up” podcast, Adam Breneman. More on Adam in a moment, but first the big news… Last Friday, the Ducks made a statement - not just to the Big Ten, but to all of college football. Dan Lanning, along with coordinators Tosh Lupoi and Will Stein, signed well-deserved contract extensions, ensuring Oregon remains a powerhouse under their leadership. It got me thinking about the first time I met Dan. It was at Camp Tontozona, and he was a young graduate assistant with big dreams. We stood on the field before practice, talking about the team, his path, and mine. From that moment, I knew he was going places. Since arriving in Eugene, Dan has stood out—not just for his coaching acumen, but for his perspective on life. Family first, profession second. He’s a devoted husband and father who believes that elite programs can still find balance. Now, entering his fourth season as head coach, he’s not only built one of the nation’s premier programs but also led Oregon to an undefeated regular season and a Big Ten title last year. College football is full of impressive leaders, but it’s always special to see the “good guys" get rewarded. Huge congratulations to Dan, Tosh, Will, and their families - each one of them deserving of these contracts and the continued success in Eugene. More of my thoughts on Lanning & the Ducks in today’s podcast. TODAY’S GUEST: ADAM BRENEMAN Speaking of success, today’s guest, Adam Breneman, knows a thing or two about it. He calls himself a sports entrepreneur, media personality, and creator. I call him a friend - one with an infectious optimism about life, content, and the power of sports. We’ve known each other for a decade and share the experience of transitioning from coaching to media. In this conversation, he shares insights into his business, advice for content creators, his approach to interviewing big-time head coaches, and why he believes the Big Ten is the nation’s top football conference. He also opens up about one of the darkest times in his life - leaving Arizona State in the public eye - and how he navigated that journey. This episode will leave you inspired to create, to push forward, and to see challenges as opportunities. As always, our conversations are powered by our founding partner, 76 , keeping you in the know on the Go, Go, Go. Hello from Tuscaloosa! Well, not today - but that’s where I recently sat down with Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer inside the Crimson Tide football facility. I’ve known Coach DeBoer since his days at Fresno State. I first met him in the Fall of 2021, when his Bulldogs visited the Rose Bowl to take on UCLA. That night, I was in the booth alongside Ted Robinson, calling what many would later dub the Game of the Year - a thrilling win led by Jake Haener and an unforgettable moment for Fresno State football . Even then, it was clear that DeBoer had a rare combination of confidence and humility, the kind of coach players rally behind. From there, he headed north to Washington, where he restored the Huskies to national prominence, culminating in a 2023 National Championship appearance. I remember interviewing him postgame after their loss to Michigan—their only defeat of the season. As expected, he was heartbroken. Leaving the stadium in Houston that night, I couldn’t help but wonder what 2024 had in store for his Huskies. As fate would have it, Nick Saban retired just 2 days later , setting off a domino effect across college football. When the dust settled, Coach DeBoer found himself getting off a plane in front of 3,000 Alabama fans, officially becoming the next leader of the Crimson Tide. Over the past year, we spoke a few times, but it wasn’t until last week that we saw each other in person again. I had the opportunity to visit his program and speak with his team - a privilege I don’t take lightly. Walking into Alabama’s team room was a surreal moment. I’ve always respected the gravity of a team meeting space, but Alabama’s was on another level . For the next hour, we dove into media training, storytelling, and brand building. The players were engaged, thoughtful, and hungry to learn , and I walked away incredibly impressed with the culture Coach DeBoer has cultivated. Flying home, I couldn’t help but smile - his team reflects his values, and that says everything you need to know about Kalen DeBoer as a leader. With spring ball just a week away, we covered a range of topics, including being reunited with offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb. Year Two of the DeBoer Era will be fascinating, and I expect Alabama to continue evolving under his leadership. Bottom Line: My time in Alabama was a blast. The people were welcoming, the food was Southern to its core , and the players and staff were first-class. In today’s episode, Jim Thornby and I break down my experience in Tuscaloosa, including one major change inside the facility (fast-forward to the end of our conversation if you’re curious). Spring Games: Do They Matter? We also dive into an ongoing debate—Spring Games. Who should have them? Do they matter? Do they really matter? Curious where you stand—let us know! Bernard Muir Steps Down at Stanford In other news, Stanford AD Bernard Muir announced he will step down at the end of this academic year after 13 years on The Farm. I’ve known Bernard for his entire Stanford tenure, and while the football program has struggled in recent years, his accomplishments should not go unnoticed. He led Stanford football to unprecedented success, navigated COVID-19’s impact on college sports, and played a key role in the ever-shifting world of conference realignment - not an easy task. On a personal note, I can recall a night in New York City after Bryce Love’s Heisman appearance as a finalist. Bernard invited me and our entire TV crew to dinner with the Stanford staff and Bryce’s family. In a profession that is becoming more professional by the day, Bernard Muir always saw the humanity within it and that invitation was just one example of it. He is a friend and one of the most respected people in sports. His integrity is second to none, and while I hope he and his wife take some well-earned time off, I have no doubt that whatever he does next will be met with success. As for Stanford football? A quick walk around that campus is enough to remind you how special the program can be. A quick watch of David Shaw’s TedX Talk will paint the picture of what Stanford was. But the new administration must invest in it if they want to return to prominence. I hope they do. And as always, I’ll be rooting for Nerd Nation. What is going on in recruiting right now?! This year the portal is seeing big name players who I would have never imagined entering and now exploring new homes in college football. Before creating our own opinions here at Y-Option we had to talk to the expert of all things recruiting, Brandon Huffman, who joined the podcast thanks to our founding partner 76. Brandon is the National Recruiting Editor for 247Sports and one of the most genuine and talented humans I know. He has joined this show every year for quite some time to share his insights into the Early Signing Period, recruiting and the future of college football. This episode is a little different. We spent 80% of the time talking about the new-look portal, agents and some guidance on how to navigate it all. We also gained expertise around the Ducks, Trojans, Bruins, Huskies and more West Coast teams as the Early Signing Period was last week and Portal Palooza is in full effect. While Brandon’s insights are golden, how he continues to inspire the sporting community with the Avery Huffman DIPG Foundation, in honor of his daughter Avery, is incredibly powerful. It was established in 2016 and grows stronger by the day. While we all are extremely busy during this time of the year please take a moment to learn more about Avery’s story, and how the Huffman family continues to impact people across the globe through this foundation. Please visit averystrongdipg.org and spread the word about Avery and how she continues to live on in so many beautiful ways. #AveryStrong Much love, Yogi This episode is executive produced by Jim Thornby and edited by Victor Ren This podcast is a Best Coast Media production This is a public episode. The CFP bracket is set. Some are thrilled, some are frustrated and a few are still politicking. Those of us on the West Coast are pretty happy, and rightfully so with Oregon, ASU and Boise State all receiving first round byes. The Heisman finalists are also set and prior to departing for NYC, we had 1997 Heisman Trophy finalist Ryan Leaf join Y-Option, thanks to our founding partner 76. We dove into his first trip to The City That Never Sleeps while also learning about his post-event celebration that included his father singing alongside some of college football’s all-time greats as the sun was rising. He also shared his intimate thoughts on perspective, as last week was the 10-year anniversary of him walking out of prison. The CW Sports college football analyst detailed his 2024 season in the booth with Y-Option alums Ted Robinson and Nigel Burton, as this trio called the Washington State at Oregon State game a few weeks ago. Jim Thornby and I take a look back on Championship Weekend, as both of us were in Indy for the Big Ten Championship game and look forward to the bracket that is top heavy with West Coast teams. Championship week is upon us, Early Signing Period is underway and Heisman voters have their ballots. Welcome back to Y-Option, where we bring you college football content through the lens of the West Coast! Today, Jim Thornby and I break down the state of the most recent College Football Playoff rankings and how the dominos could impact the West Coast in college football. Fresh off my trip to Eugene, I also share insights from sitting down with Oregon’s Dan Lanning and Dillon Gabriel as we take a deep dive into the Big Ten title game with our guest Rhett Lewis, with thanks to our founding partner 76. Speaking of Rhett, his podcast BLeav in Big Ten is a go-to source for all things B1G and we did a little home and home podcast this week, with our conversation appearing on both shows. Rhett reflected on the improbable run that his Indiana Hoosiers have been on and what to expect from Penn State against the Ducks. Finally, I shared my 10-point scale on how I vote for the Heisman. For the 870 voters, maybe this will help you out as you decide who should hoist that trophy next week. I’d love to learn how you vote as well, as I think the responsibility of our vote deserves thoughtfulness vs. regionality bias. A reminder that the definition of the Heisman is awarded to the “Outstanding college football player whose performance best exhibits the pursuit of excellence with integrity.” With that, here is my 10-point voting scale: * Competitive dominance * Power 4 filter * Would I pay money to see player prepare, practice, perform? * Can they process? * Their It Factor: making your presence felt and elevating the performance of those around you - this comes from conversations with their coaches/teammates * Injury factor: when were they and how many injuries around them/their team on the field * Did you win your conference? * Analytics * Integrity off the field: classroom/community * Performance on ‘Big Stages’ - a real time grade (1-5) and a film study post-game As always, thanks for the support. Jim and I are off to Indianapolis for the Big Ten Champ Game and much more. Be sure to tune into Big Ten Network for our coverage and Y-Option on social for behind the scenes content. Happy Thanksgiving Week! It’s a week full of rivalry games, College Football Playoff implications and most importantly Turkey Bowl games in your backyard. Anyone else already claim “all-time QB”? With that said, we bring you a special Thanksgiving episode of Y-Option, thanks to our founding partner 76, with a unique guest in Big Sky commissioner Tom Wistrcill. Commissioner Wistrcill is in his 5th year leading the Big Sky and this weekend they kick off their postseason with 5 of his schools in the FCS Playoffs. He shares insight into his leadership philosophy, the impact he thinks the CFP will have on college football, the state of roster management, the trickle up & down effect in college football, the Pac-12 rebuild and what the next move should be in the chaotic world of college football. It’s a powerful discussion from someone who is in the rooms where meaningful decisions are made. As FBS football changes shape in a matter of weeks, Commissioner Wistrcill offers a lens from someone who has worked in the Big Ten and been an FBS Athletic Director and is now leading the top conference in FCS. In addition, Jim Thornby and I explore some hot topics with a thoughtful lens. For instance, did Travis Hunter get snubbed for the Thorpe Award? What’s happening in the Big 12? Will Cal take down SMU and how would that impact the ACC’s standing in the CFP? Will UW roll with true freshman Demond Williams at QB against the top team in the land, Oregon? A reminder that the CFP is not an invitational and if you lose 3 games you are not given a pass. Plus, I give some major takeaways from my first season in the B1G and my thoughts on the massive showdown in Columbus with Ohio State hosting Michigan. We finish off by sharing what we are thankful for (spoiler, it’s YOU!). Pre-Thanksgiving I’m about to embark on baking a few pies and post-Thanksgiving, I’m off to the Rose Bowl to call one final game this fall alongside our phenomenal Big Ten Network crew. If history suggests, it’s going to be another close one as our crew only calls tight games! Or as our group text thread states, #BangersOnly! Much love and many thanks to all of you and if you’re playing in your Turkey Bowl, I fully expect to see a version of what Cal and Illinois ran for their 2-point plays last weekend or if you dare, bust out this end around from the Dolphins. It’s Rivalry Week out West and we have you covered at Y-Option. USC visits the Rose Bowl for an iconic game in Los Angeles against the Bruins with stakes locally, and the postseason for both teams is on the line. Stanford heads across the Bay to visit Cal in The Big Game in what should be a packed house at Memorial Stadium as the Bears hope to clinch a bowl berth. Oregon State hosts Washington State in a game pitting two Pac-12 schools who, over the past 12 months, have navigated adversity unseen in college sports and we welcomed the man who will be the sideline analyst on The CW for the Cougs vs. Beavs, Nigel Burton, to the latest episode of Y-Option presented by our founding partner 76. I’ve known Nigel for years, having broadcast his first game as the head coach at Portland State and was fortunate to have him as a colleague for over a decade at the Pac-12 Network. We dove into the game, both Trent Bray and Jake Dickert’s role as each school's respective head coach and what his year has been like at the CW. In addition, Nigel unearthed what it’s like to be a parent of a college football player, as his son Jace is a freshman defensive back at Nigel’s alma mater, Washington. Jim Thornby and I thoughtfully react to the latest CFP rankings, discuss #5 Indiana visiting #2 Ohio State and a huge weekend in the Big 12. Can #16 Colorado keep it going? Will #21 ASU take the next step toward a Big 12 title berth as they host #14 BYU? Can Utah play spoiler to #22 Iowa State on Senior Night at Rice-Eccles? I’m off to D.C. as Maryland hosts Iowa in a B1G game at 9a PST in a game that has two teams that play completely different styles of football. There are only two weekends for the majority of fans in college football to watch your team compete. Our advice, lean into it and enjoy every moment as you’ll be yearning for football season to return in a matter of weeks once the regular season ends. Finally, the Pullman community lost a special young man this past weekend. 13-year-old Zion Bischoff passed away in an automobile accident and his impact on so many people has been celebrated. Please consider supporting the Bischoff family as they process this tragedy by visiting their GoFundMe page , Washington State will be wearing “ZB” patches on their helmets this weekend to honor Zion, who was close with many of the coaches’ children. Our hearts go out to his family and friends, as we lost a beautiful soul far too soon. Every week from the West Coast we hope to bring you thoughtful conversations, insight and analysis in college football. Thanks to our founding partner 76, today we welcome a repeat guest in Oregon State head coach Trent Bray. In a season full of injuries and adversity, the Beavers head coach continues to lead his program with an optimistic and determined approach. With so many young players, I think the benefit will be seen in coming years, specifically in Year 1 of the rebuilt Pac-12 in 2026. We dive into that with Coach Bray, as well as what has been the most enjoyable and most challenging elements in the first year of his career as a head coach. How about Year 1 of the new look B1G?! On Saturday. the nation saw Dan Lanning’s aggressive style in full effect once again. It reminded me of Pete Carroll back in the day. To be that aggressive, you must trust that your team has the capacity to handle either side of the result. Jim Thornby and I break that down, as well as the upside down Big 12, with coach of the year candidates Deion Sanders and Kenny Dillingham. We also dig into the Heisman, the embarrassing nonconference opponents in the SEC this weekend, Week 12’s Go Go Go Award winners presented by 76 and explore this year's matchup in the Pac-12 with Washington State and Oregon State. It’s Week 13 folks, let’s not miss a moment! Week 12 is upon us and while it may be hard to predict who will make the inaugural College Football Playoff, one thing that is relatively certain is that UCLA linebacker Carson Schwesinger will find his way to another double digit tackle game. The former walk-on is leading the Big Ten Conference in tackles per game and is leading the Bruins on a resurgence in DeShaun Foster’s first season. Thanks to our founding partner 76, he shared what led him to walk on at UCLA, how his father inspired him and this team's mindset heading into their Friday night tilt against former Pac-12 turned B1G foe Washington. Jim Thornby and I also take a deep dive into the CFP, why Oregon continues to thrive and the Washington State Cougars path to the postseason. I shared a story from USC where Pete Carroll taught me the difference between ‘hoping’ and ‘knowing’ and how the Trojans and Nebraska Cornhuskers are in a similar position heading into this weekend’s game at the Coliseum. In addition, we discuss who needs a win more - USC or Arizona and what would have happened in the Pac-12 this season if things didn’t change after last year. As always, thank you for the support and enjoy this weekend. I’m off to Chicago for some studio work at the Big Ten Network in what will be another competitive weekend in the game we all love. 4 teams remain unbeaten and none reside in the south. So this week, Y-Option went down south to talk to an expert in all things college football, Andy Staples. Andy is the host of Andy & Ari On3 , a daily college football podcast covering every major story. He joined us to dive into the CFP, how many teams should make the expanded playoff from the SEC and B1G, as well as his thoughts on the Heisman. He gives his take on the Washington State Cougars, both USC and UCLA and of course what last weekend was like in Oxford around Lane Kiffin’s Ole Miss squad. Finally, we answer the question of “is anyone truly elite this year in college football?” Jim Thornby and I also celebrate this weeks Go Go Go Award Winners at Y-Option, presented by 76 as John Mateer, Ashton Jeanty and Jordan Burch all repeat as award winners and UCLA head coach DeShaun Foster is named our Headset Hero for the first time. As always, follow @YOptionfb for all things college football, through the lens of the West Coast. Much love, Yogi This episode is executive produced by Jim Thornby and edited by Victor Ren. Preseason polls mean absolute squat. Ok, that may be a bit harsh but today’s guest on Y-Option, thanks to our founding partner 76, is Arizona State head coach Kenny Dillingham. His Sun Devils were picked to finish last in the new look Big 12 in the preseason and as we enter November, his squad is in the thick of the Big 12 race. This week, they welcome Central Florida to Tempe and the Valley will certainly be activated . I’ve always felt that ASU was a “sleeping giant” and in their new league with very few dominant teams, it looks like they are building toward that. With Dillingham, an alum and Scottsdale native leading the way, there is no reason why they can’t become a power within the Big 12. It certainly helps having a Heisman candidate in Cam Skattebo aka That Dude! for them as well. We asked the ASU head coach the latest on Cam’s health too. While USC is not in the conversation for the Big Ten title, they are always a story, even on a bye week. The Trojans made a change at QB and will start UNLV transfer Jayden Maiava, who thrived last year in Las Vegas throwing for 3,085 pass yds and 17 passing touchdowns while rushing for 277 yards with 3 scores. We dive into that decision and how sensitive the QB room is. Finally, we look into the first week of the College Football Playoff rankings, what they mean for the Washington State Cougars and how the committee may be viewing this season with the new format. I’m off to Kansas City to call Iowa State and Kansas in a Big 12 contest on FS1 at Arrowhead Stadium. And no, I won’t be eating any BBQ (I’m vegetarian), but I am on the hunt for a cool cafe. If you have any recommendations please let us know on social media, @ Y-Option. Enjoy Week 11 and amid changes in all of our worlds, stay steady. I feel like the luckiest broadcaster in college football. Every Saturday I get to stand at the 50-yard line and celebrate the greatest game on earth and attempt to coach the viewer. Those two thoughts have been at the core of my career. But to have any success at anything one must be taught, guided and mentored. Thankfully for me the men I’ve stood next to every weekend have done just that. But none more so than Ted Robinson. Ted has changed my life on air, off air and each Saturday while on Big Ten Network (or this weekend Fox Sports 1). His words of wisdom, encouragement and kindness are constantly working in my subconscious and the skills he taught me are hopefully used in real time each weekend. Thankfully for us at Y-Option and our founding partner 76, he’s also in your world in today’s podcast. The play-by-play voice of The CW joined me to talk about the Washington State Cougars, Oregon State Beavers and the state of college football. We take a deep dive into the growth of John Mateer, the leadership of Jake Dickert, the state of the Beavs and with the legendary Bill Walton’s birthday this Tuesday, we celebrate that as well. Jim Thornby and I also detail this week's Go Go Go Awards , presented by 76 and play a game titled ‘Bowl or No Bowl’ as we discuss the numerous teams that are on the cusp of bowl eligibility. If you’re a fan of UW, Cal, Utah, OSU, USC, UCLA or Arizona this is a section you might enjoy. Back to prep, as Guy Haberman and I are calling the Iowa State vs. Kansas game at Arrowhead Stadium this weekend on FS1. Fun fact, I called that exact game in the Chiefs’ stadium in 2010 where Tom Herman was the Iowa State OC. Time flies! Finally, the next few days will be stressful on many fronts so let’s all lean into the joy in our lives and as fellow Substacker Dan Rather always says, ‘Stay Steady.’ Much love, Yogi This episode is executive produced by Jim Thornby and edited by Victor Ren. Every quarterback dreams of leading their team to the College Football Playoff, but only few get the opportunity. As we enter November in college football, just over 20 teams are still in the mix for the expanded CFP and John Mateer of Washington State is currently the quarterback of one of them. This WSU signal caller joined the Y-Option podcast, fueled by our founding partner 76, for the first time to talk about this Cougars season, his path from the 119th ranked QB in the class of 2022 to Heisman Trophy candidate and the mindset of “America’s Team” under Jake Dickert in the final month of the season. Jim Thornby and I also dive into a huge weekend in the Big Ten and the road trips for both the Arizona Wildcats and the Arizona State Sun Devils in the new look Big-12. In addition, will my Pitt Panthers keep it rolling at SMU in a battle of unbeatens in ACC conference play? Plus, we get ready for Halloween as the Dodgers easily made the West Coast proud. I’m off to Nebraska for the Cornhuskers and the UCLA Bruins with bowl eligibility at top of mind for both teams. As always, enjoy the weekend and be sure to follow Y-Option on social media. “The games they remember are in November.” With Week 9 in the rearview mirror, I'm reminded of a quote from good friend Rick Neuheisel and with the nation's top team, Oregon, heading to The Big House to face defending National Champion Michigan this weekend that is easily true. Today’s Y-Option podcast, fueled by our founding partner 76, features a man who knows the Maize & Blue well. Former Michigan All-American tight end Jake Butt joins the show for the first time to share insight on his school, as he was on this past weekend's call of Michigan’s win over rival Michigan State. The Wolverines finally had consistent play from the quarterback room even as they played 2 with Davis Warren and Alex Orji, showcasing big-play potential against Jonathan Smith’s Spartans. Jake will also be on the call for USC at Washington this Saturday. The Trojans and Dawgs are longtime foes, but this will be their first contest in the new look B1G. We also discuss the Big Ten race, my conversation with legendary coach Nick Saban, the upcoming CFP rankings and how the Washington State Cougars are still in the mix for all of the things. And as always, we celebrate our Y-Option Go Go Go Awards as Fernando Mendoza, Makai Lemon, Ansel Din-Mbuh and Kalani Sitake took home the awards from Week 9, presented by our founding partner 76. Hope you enjoy today’s episode, let us know what you might have asked Coach Saban if you had the chance on social media Much love, Yogi This episode is executive produced by Jim Thornby and edited by Victor Ren. Week 9 arrives as does ESPN’s College GameDay into Bloomington, Indiana. Last week it was Big Noon Kickoff at IU and this Saturday comes another party, as undefeated #13 Indiana hosts Washington on the Big Ten Network. I’ll be on the call alongside Guy Haberman, Rhett Lewis and our incredible crew. In today’s episode we welcome Washington head coach Jedd Fisch back to the podcast thanks to our founding partners 76. Coach Fisch and I met back in 2009 while both interviewing for the Seattle Seahawks. He took the job and I pivoted out of coaching and into the media. Since then we have had numerous conversations about building a program, his approach to quarterbacks and much more. Today we discuss the upcoming 9 a.m. PT kickoff and what they call it, what year one at Washington has been like and the impact of Bill Belichick, Pete Carroll and Sean McVay on his vision at UW. Jim Thornby and I also take a deep dive into the game that might impact the College Football Playoff lens on the West Coast in a major way with #17 Boise State visiting UNLV, as well which of the now 9 undefeated teams (we taped this before Liberty’s loss Wednesday night) will remain without a loss after this weekend’s slate. Spoiler, my #19 Pitt Panthers will keep it rolling in an old school Big East re-match on Thursday night with Larry Fitzgerald in attendance :). The NFL Combine is underway with players arriving and the on-field workouts beginning Thursday, and as always, the spotlight is on the quarterbacks. While Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders won’t be throwing, he’s still expected to be the talk of the week in Indianapolis. This week on Y-Option fueled by our founding partner 76, ESPN and SiriusXM broadcaster Roddy Jones joined me to break down the quarterbacks at the NFL Combine. We discussed his unique experience calling 4 Colorado games this season and his thoughts on how Shedeur Sanders will fit into an NFL locker room. Roddy also shared his insights on other top signal-callers, including Cam Ward, Jaxson Dart, and Dillon Gabriel. As a former dual-sport athlete growing up in Atlanta who was even drafted by the Chicago White Sox, Roddy brings a unique perspective on Deion Sanders and his impact. His approach as an analyst is equally distinctive, and what has always stood out to me is his humility, which was on full display in our conversation. If you’re craving more NFL Combine content, be sure to check out last week's episode with Mark Sanchez or my conversation with Dillon Gabriel . I met Mark Sanchez in the fall of 2005. It was my first season at USC and our team was regarded as the best in the history of the game. Mark was a rising star in Southern California as a freshman quarterback with a rocket arm and an infectious personality. I was a 22-year-old transplant from Pennsylvania who fell in love with the Pacific, the USC football vibe and everything LA had to offer. As a young coach you are often seeking to find your way, and that way is usually through the lens of those mentoring you. At USC in 2005 those mentors included Pete Carroll, Steve Sarkisian, Lane Kiffin and others. And in the QB room, it was a Who's Who of college football. Matt Leinart was coming off a Heisman campaign, John David Booty was his heir apparent with Mark Sanchez waiting in the wings. He and I became close friends as we both found our footing at USC. From two different coasts it was clear from Day 1 that we had the same goals – compete to do things better than they had ever been done before, master this unique offense and begin the path to mastery around quarterback play. We both learned quickly that one is never a master at this position, but both of us became obsessed with that craft. As the NFL Combine approaches, Mark Sanchez is our guest on this week's Y-Option podcast, fueled by our founding partner 76. We dove into the nuances of the position, what matters most for a QB to find success in the NFL and took a deep dive into the Las Vegas Raiders as Mark is the ONLY quarterback to start for both a Pete Carroll (USC) AND Chip Kelly (Eagles) led team. And yes, we also went down memory lane while talking in depth about one of his favorite plays, Y-Option. Have a great weekend and thank you for the support - none of this is possible without our community and love pouring into it while getting to know the new subscribers along the way. Much love and stay steady, Yogi P.S. I just spent a few days in Tuscaloosa and those stories plus an in-depth interview with Kalen DeBoer will be coming next week. Years ago, I was on the Elite 11 quarterback camp tour and kept hearing coaches talking about QBs having the “It Factor.” It was as though everywhere I turned that phrase was being thrown around. As time would pass, it felt as though that became the most overused and undefinable phrase in football. So in the summer of 2016, a few of us set out to truly understand what it meant to have the It Factor and I would direct the film titled The It Factory. We canvassed the nation, asking premiere coaches, players and broadcasters to share their explanation of that phrase. It was fascinating as the nuances behind that phrase were so unique. The conclusion: those that have the It Factor walk into a room and people feel their presence…AND they make everyone in that room better . Dillon Gabriel is exactly that. He joined the Y-Option podcast over the weekend in our Venice Beach studio where he reflected on his record breaking year in Eugene, the impact of the Oregon staff, how he is preparing to actualize a childhood dream, his parents impact on him, and yes, to discuss his It Factor. He also accepted one of our final 4 season-ending awards in collaboration with our founding partner 76, as we named Dillon “My 5-Star QB” of the Year. The authentic nature of Dillon’s personality is infectious, as I’ve seen him in rooms full of high school quarterbacks, in the Oregon football facility, around Heisman winners or literally in my kitchen with my family. I’d go as far to say that his It Factor is the most impressive my eyes have ever seen in 25 years around major college football. And yes, I know what I’m saying when I write that. Dillon Gabriel is a special talent and the NFL franchise that he lands at in late April will have a dynamic leader in their QB room. How do you define the It Factor? Who has it? Can you cultivate it? I’d love to hear your opinions in the comments at Y-Option.com or on social media as we truly enter the offseason in the sport we love. Fly Eagles Fly! The Philadelphia Eagles dominated the Kansas City Chiefs to win this year's Super Bowl. As a Pennsylvania native, I’ve seen the passion from Philly fans since I was a child. Watching them dominate this past Sunday, I had Randall Cunningham memories flooding my mind. For former Eagle and Oregon Ducks’ Hall of Famer Kenjon Barner, he too was going down memory lane this weekend. A member of the Super Bowl LII Champions in 2018, Kenjon holds a special place for Eagle fans and the City of Brotherly Love in his heart. He shared the impact of that team on the latest episode of the Y-Option podcast, sponsored by our founding partner 76. Barner, a 3-time Super Bowl champ, is one of two players in NFL history to have Super Bowl rings from 3 different franchises (along with Matt Millen) and each one was unique. From Philly when he was a return specialist to New England the following season when he was not even on the roster during the Super Bowl to being in Tampa Bay during the COVID season with Tom Brady, the path that Barner was on to garner 3 rings is as unique as any in the NFL. Like every player, Kenjon also navigated the transition from playing to life off the gridiron. Now, he hosts the podcast Ducks of a Feather , alongside former Oregon All-American running back Jonathan Stewart, where they share insights and analysis on the reigning B1G champions. Overall, our conversation is a positive listen for any player navigating recruiting while also providing a lens on life through the eyes of a player who has been at epic highs while navigating life post playing career and the natural lows that come with that. Hope you enjoy today’s conversation with my colleague, friend and former Oregon Duck, Kenjon Barner. I can recall the moment like it was yesterday. USC vs Texas. The Rose Bowl. Burnt orange filling up one half of the iconic stadium and cardinal and gold filling up the other. A sunset for the ages. Keith Jackson. Pete Carroll. Mack Brown. Matt Leinart. Reggie Bush. And of course, Vince Young. I’ve yet to watch that game back, as it was the finale of my first year on the USC staff, but since that day I’ve always had great regard for the Texas head coach, Mack Brown. A few years ago he joined my podcast and since that conversation, I’ve always perked up when he would speak about the game we all adore. Coach Brown is a Hall of Fame and National Championship winning coach, but he is also a guardian of the game. His lens on the current state of the game, his advice to current coaches and his infectious energy are traits that we all can learn from and I’m honored to have him on today’s Y-Option podcast, thanks to our founding partner 76. We reflected back on his career, how he navigated the pressures in coaching and even some of his regrets. What landed most was his sage advice to coaches as we dove into the topic of “self-compassion” in coaching, or the lack thereof. And can’t we all use a little bit of that in today’s world? I know I can. Hope you enjoy today’s conversation with the legendary coach, Mack Brown. Fresh off of an epic football season, Arizona State Athletics Director Graham Rossini joins the Y-Option podcast for the 2nd time, thanks to our founding partners at 76. I can recall my first year coaching at USC and our game at ASU. It was an epic back-and-forth showdown and while the Trojans were able to win it late, I left ASU with the feeling that many others have always felt, “ASU is a sleeping giant.” After the Sun Devils run from being picked dead last in the preseason to becoming the Big 12 champions who took Texas to the absolute brink in the CFP all while being led by a rising star in Kenny Dillingham, it’s safe to assume that that giant is fully awakened. Graham and I dove into the year that was in Tempe, his leadership style and how he has guided this athletic department as he recently extended the contracts of Coach Dillingham and both coordinators, Brian Ward and Marcus Arroyo. He also shared what it was like on the field postgame with Coach Dillingham after big wins ( aka “I was one of these guys!” ) and what was said in the ASU locker room after the CFP loss. Always thoughtful, Graham explained his lens on the current CFP model and what it was like to represent the West Coast in major college football in a powerful way this season. Personally, it’s been a joy to watch Graham lead the Sun Devils and take risks, or as he likes to say, “say yes, and figure out the details.” Thank you for reading today’s newsletter and if you enjoy the lessons learned from today’s podcast please share it with a friend, as your support of Y-Option allows us to continue to grow this community of thoughtful and connected fans of the game we all love. In the afterglow of the CFP National Championship Game, former Ohio State Buckeye Ben Hartsock joins Y-Option to share his joy, insight and analysis on the best team in the 2024-25 season, as well as answer the question of “What wins?” when it comes to building a team in college football. As the season concluded, both Jim Thornby and I reflect back on Monday night’s game, the longest season in the history of college football and debate whether the regular season is becoming devalued. I also play the “What If” game regarding this Ohio State team against some of the greatest teams of the 21st century: Miami in 2001, USC in 2005, LSU in 2019 or Alabama in 2020. Ultimately, we conclude that it’s a rather impossible comparison but one that reminds us that college football is in a new era on various levels. There are many experts offering insight into the National Championship game with Notre Dame facing Ohio State on Monday, January 20th. Among them all, one person stands out. Meet Gerry DiNardo, a former Notre Dame All-American & 1973 National Champion, now a long-time analyst at the Big Ten Network. I call him “Coach” as his vibe, presence and commentary continues to reflect the role he had as the head coach at Vanderbilt, LSU, and Indiana. He joined us on Y-Option, thanks to our founding partner 76, to discuss what made his time in South Bend so powerful under the legendary Ara Parseghian as well as why the loss to Michigan might be the reason that Ohio State is 60 minutes away from hoisting the national championship trophy. We also reflect on his time with Bill McCartney at Colorado, having been on his staff for 9 seasons. Coach DiNardo will have you laughing and learning as he shares poignant and vivid stories as a Buff. In addition, Jim Thornby and I reflect on the semifinals and the duality of being at the Cotton Bowl while my mind was with those in Los Angeles . The CFP semifinals are upon us! Thanks to our founding partner 76, Elite 11 President and close friend Brian Stumpf joins the show to take a deep dive into the quarterback position among the four teams remaining in the College Football Playoff. His recall into what Quinn Ewers, Will Howard, Riley Leonard and Drew Allar were in high school is fascinating, as each of their journeys are incredibly unique. We dove into the instant stardom that Ewers received the summer heading into his senior year at the Elite 11 and the path of Will Howard, who was in the same QB class as former Buckeye great CJ Stroud. Think about that for a moment! We also dive into Brian’s lens on being a general manager in college football. If I was a team president or head coach, Brian would be my first call as his evaluation, relationships and character traits are as good as I’ve ever come across. Jim Thornby and I also explore the state of the game in a wide ranging conversation around the professionalization of college football, private equity and officiating. We also give our keys to the two semifinal games, as I’m in Dallas covering the Cotton Bowl for the Big Ten Network all week. Most importantly, we want to send our love and support to everyone in Southern California who is navigating the wildfires that have impacted thousands of homes and families. Much love to all and hope this show and the upcoming playoff games can offer a little reprieve during this challenging time in Los Angeles. LIVE from Rose Bowl Media Day, Ashley Adamson of the Big Ten Network joins the show to offer her insight into the all-Big Ten Quarterfinal matchup of Ohio State and Oregon. Thanks to our founding partner 76 - fresh off of the BTN set, Ashley and I offer our immediate takeaways, what we read between the lines during our interviews and our biggest takeaway in advance of the rematch of what I think are the nation's top two teams. Jim Thornby and I have a spirited conversation about quarterbacks participating in bowl games as the decision around Cam Ward sitting in the 2nd half of the Pop-Tarts Bowl continues to be a point of discussion around the country. We also offer a preview of the other three CFP quarterfinal games where stakes are high and it seems like most around the nation are not giving conference champions Boise State or Arizona State much of a chance. For ASU and Texas, the game will provide some of the best playcallers on both sides of the ball in the game and for Boise State, this one will come down to their passing game and unforced errors. In addition, we want to wish all of you a Happy New Year! It’s been a wild year for us at Y-Option and we can hope each of you take time to reflect on the year with loved ones and fans of the game we all love. I’ll be at the Rose Bowl on New Years Day, being a part of my 18th Rose Bowl overall and first on the Big Ten Network. I must say, I sense the same excitement in advance of this one as I did in the first one I went to in 2003. And amid so many changes in college football, I hope you are leaning into the joys of the game we all love. Happy New Year! The first round of the inaugural expanded College Football Playoff has come and gone. There are countless opinions, but I think we can all agree that this new format was a massive win for the sport we all love. Another thing in sports that we love is taking the helmet off of players and getting to know them. I’ve been around Dillon Gabriel since June at the Elite 11 Finals and as I’ve said many times, his It Factor is as high as any quarterback I’ve ever been around in my career. How was that cultivated? Where did that come from? Well, we went straight to the source and welcomed his mother, Dori Gabriel, to Y-Option in our Holiday episode, thanks to our founding partner 76. From Hawaii to our studio, she shared what the kitchen table was like in her home, how her and her husband Garrett (a former QB at Hawai’i himself) guided Dillon, her thoughts on #VanLife, her experience in NYC at the Heisman and how the Oregon Duck community has impacted her family in powerful ways. It’s a powerful episode as so many parents are seeking wisdom while guiding their children as athletes in this new world of athletics in youth sports, high school and college athletics. As a parent of two young boys, I easily took away principles I’ll share with our kids and hope they get to meet the Gabriel family at the Rose Bowl on New Years Day. Before we get to the quarterfinals let’s look back on the CFP from the lens of the West Coast as a few things also stood out: * It looked cold in those games! I almost wished it was snowing to make the temperature look even more unique. * The home crowds had an impact and kept the pageantry in bowl season, which all too often feels corporate. I’d vote for the quarterfinals to be home games too. More on that in today’s podcast. * Ohio State played their best game of the season. They drilled Tennessee on the field, but I was more interested in what went on off the field since their game against Michigan. I said before the game that this team MUST play free and let it rip and they did exactly that. The Buckeyes looked loose, aggressive, and not concerned about living up to their or anyone else's expectations and for the first time this year looked the part of legit national title contenders. * Speaking of the Natty, among the winners over the weekend, I could see all four of them in the final game of this season. We will be sure to dive into all of that in advance of New Years Eve but in the meantime, be sure to enjoy your holiday season and our conversation with Dori Gabriel. With the inaugural 12-team CFP set to kickoff Friday night in South Bend, Indiana, we welcome Notre Dame alum and the voice of the L.A. Rams, J.B. Long, to the show with thanks to our founding partner 76. J.B. called games this fall in the Pac-12, Mountain West and the NFL. His lens on the new look playoff, the current reality of college football and his insights on Washington State have tremendous depth and breath. One of my dearest friends and one of the most talented voices in sports, J.B. brings a lens that is truly one of one. We also dive into stories from South Bend - his as a student and broadcaster & mine as a player and coach, that neither of us have ever shared and you might get a laugh or two from them. Jim Thornby and I also offer a conversation on the state of the Cougs, the transfer portal, how colleges are building out their NIL “matrix” and the slate of playoff games this weekend that are giving us some historical matchups. Enjoy this weekend and be sure to follow along as I’ll be tracking each game in real time on Threads !
