Join us on The DMV Business Show with Otto Sevilla as we feature Joe Cody , the Founder of Grain Fertility , a care coordination and fertility patient navigation service. Grain Fertility aims to support patients undergoing fertility treatments and clinics by providing patient empowerment coaches, a secure application to organize treatment information, and guidance on navigating the complex process. The service is led by medical professionals who translate complex medical information into understandable language, making fertility treatment information accessible to patients. Joe Cody grew up in St. Louis, fascinated by weather and science from a young age. He wanted to be a meteorologist, but opted instead for a degree in political science. This led him to work on Capitol Hill. Joe's childhood fascination with weather began when he witnessed a tornado in person in first grade. He still enjoys weather-related activities as a hobby. Interestingly, his interest in weather started at a young age, after which he co-founded Grain Fertility, employing a complex analytical approach to making fertility treatment information understandable and accessible to patients. As Joe's background in politics and health policy came into play, he recounted his experience on Capitol Hill. His interest in fertility began after he got married and started trying to have kids. He discovered that infertility is common, expensive, and time-consuming, and was required to seek treatment from a reproductive endocrinologist. Ultimately, he and his partner had to use in vitro fertilization (IVF) to conceive, which was an overwhelming process due to the amount of information, finances, and emotional and physical impact on both partners. Grain Fertility's approach to fertility treatment information is unique, employing patient empowerment coaches, a secure application, and guidance on navigating the complex process. Infertility is a common, expensive, and time-consuming process, requiring patients to seek treatment from a reproductive endocrinologist. The emotional and physical impact of IVF on partners should not be underestimated, highlighting the need for patient support and guidance throughout the process. Join us on The DMV Business Show with Otto Sevilla as we showcase the inspiring journey of Ramon Tejada , the Co-Founder and CEO of Fresco , a commercial cleaning company, shared his life story and entrepreneurial journey on The DMV Business Show. The conversation highlights his immigrant journey, his experiences as an adult, and the growth of Fresco from a small startup to a successful commercial cleaning company. Ramon was born in the Dominican Republic and moved to the US as an adult on a business administration scholarship. He spent six years in the DR before returning to the US, maintaining a connection to his culture. As a child, Ramon was an entrepreneur, building and creating things like toys and small farms. This entrepreneurial spirit continued into adulthood, as he enjoyed building and creating things in a digital sense. Ramon studied agricultural business administration at a community college in Iowa, rather than following in the footsteps of agricultural technicians from his home country. He chose this major to better his living conditions for his family. Despite not speaking much English when he arrived in the US, Ramon was fortunate to have a host family in Iowa that helped him adjust. After completing his degree, Ramon returned to the Dominican Republic and landed a job, which enabled him to help his family financially. He initially didn't think about returning to the US but was happy to have experienced life in America. Ramon's journey took a new turn when he started Fresco, a commercial cleaning company, with a friend, Miguel. Initially, the company served residential clients, primarily friends and family who referred them to other friends. This word-of-mouth marketing led to their first commercial account, which was with a company in Washington D.C. that still remains one of their clients after 18 years. Ramon Tejada's entrepreneurial journey is a testament to his determination, resilience, and willingness to take risks. His story serves as a valuable lesson for entrepreneurs, emphasizing the importance of embracing cultural connections, identifying a niche, building relationships, and adapting to challenges. Join us on The DMV Business Show with Otto Sevilla as we showcase the inspiring journey of Patrick "Sarge" Avon , Owner of Sarge Athletics , I was struck by his passion for fitness and his unique approach to helping people improve their physical well-being. With two locations in Frederick, Maryland and Bethany Beach, Delaware, Sarge Athletics has become a go-to destination for youth athletes looking to get stronger and more confident, as well as adults seeking general fitness, competitive sports, or improved mobility and balance. Sarge's own personal story is one of inspiration and resilience. Growing up in Upstate New York, he was naturally athletic and played sports as a kid. But it wasn't until he joined the Navy after high school that he discovered his true calling. Serving for five years, Sarge gained a sense of independence and adventure, while working in the medical field prepared him for a career in fitness. With his newfound skills in empathy, attention to detail, anatomy, and communication, Sarge was well-equipped to transition into the fitness industry. Sarge's entrepreneurial spirit led him to establish the Sergeant's Program, which started with outdoor boot camp classes for men. The business took off quickly, with the client base growing from 5 to over 30 in just a few months. As the business scaled, Sarge faced the challenges of rapid growth, including competition and building a strong brand name. To overcome these obstacles, Sarge had to adapt quickly and learn to accommodate women who wanted to join the program. With limited business experience, Sarge's background in the Navy proved to be a valuable asset, as he learned to navigate the complexities of entrepreneurship. One of the standout features of Sarge Athletics is their focus on adults aged 50 and above. This age group prioritizes mobility, independence, and strength over weight loss, and Sarge Athletics has developed exercises tailored to meet their unique needs. Interestingly, Sarge found that this age group can benefit from similar exercises used with high school and college athletes, but with modifications to accommodate their physical limitations. Sarge chose the Bethany Beach location due to the area's demographic changes, with many young families and professionals seeking a slower-paced lifestyle. The location's vibrant and active community, with many residents prioritizing physical activity and wellness, made it an ideal spot for Sarge Athletics to expand its reach. It is clear that Sarge Athletics is more than just a fitness business – it's a community of like-minded individuals who are passionate about improving their physical well-being. With its unique approach to fitness and its focus on adults 50+, Sarge Athletics is a shining example of what happens when passion, adaptability, and a commitment to excellence come together. As we look to the future, it's exciting to see what new challenges and opportunities lie ahead for Sarge Athletics. Join us on The DMV Business Show with Otto Sevilla as we meet Elizabeth (Liz) O'Donnell , the Founder and CEO of Aaliyah in Action , a non-profit organization providing bereavement support to families who have experienced baby loss shares her personal story and journey. As a former elementary teacher, Liz's life took a drastic turn after the stillbirth of her daughter, Aliyah. Liz shares her experience of being pregnant with Aliyah and having a seemingly healthy pregnancy until she started feeling reduced fetal movement at 32 weeks. Despite being told that Aliyah had no heartbeat, the hospital was unable to find a cause for the stillbirth. It was only after sending the placental slides to a researcher at Yale that they discovered Aliyah's placenta was not functioning properly, causing her death. This traumatic experience led to a significant change in Liz's life, and she now advocates for better prenatal care and supports other parents who have experienced stillbirth. Liz reflects on her experience with stillbirth and the emotional toll it took on her. She wishes she had known earlier that her baby's growth was abnormal and that more tests could have been done to detect the issue. She believes that the healthcare system prioritizes costs over saving lives, as the US is not willing to invest in costly NICU care. In contrast, other countries, such as Manchester, perform more tests, including measuring the placenta, which could have benefited her. Liz is dedicated to preventing stillbirths and supporting families who have experienced loss. She is frustrated that measuring the placenta during an ultrasound takes only 2 seconds, but insurance codes prevent it from being a routine practice. Liz has found solace in her work as a teacher and through therapy, but she acknowledges that navigating her daily life without her daughter is a lifelong journey. Liz O'Donnell's personal story is a powerful reminder of the importance of advocacy and support for families who have experienced baby loss. Her work with Aaliyah in Action is a testament to her dedication to preventing stillbirths and supporting those who have gone through this traumatic experience. Join us on The DMV Business Show with Otto Sevilla as we showcase the inspiring journey of Scott Parker . Who has built a reputation for himself as a savvy businessman in the DMV (Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia) area with a knack for identifying opportunities and turning them into successful ventures. From his humble beginnings as a bar owner to his current ownership of multiple brands and companies, Scott's journey is a testament to the power of hard work, perseverance, and strategic decision-making. One of the key factors that contributed to Scott's success is his ability to connect with customers. He emphasizes the importance of being present and building relationships with patrons, which helped him establish a loyal following and build his reputation. This approach has been particularly effective in the service industry, where customer satisfaction is paramount. For instance, Scott's dog daycare business, Playful Pack , has gained a loyal following in the DMV area. By providing a unique and welcoming experience for pet owners, Scott has built a reputation as a trusted and caring entrepreneur. Similarly, his barber shops, Bearded Goat Barber , have become go-to destinations for men seeking a high-quality haircut and a relaxed atmosphere. Scott has also learned the importance of financial discipline and resourcefulness. When he started out, he reinvested his own capital and used bank loans to fund his businesses. He has also worked with investors, but recognizes that this approach can be limiting. By bootstraping his businesses, Scott has maintained control and flexibility, allowing him to adapt to changing market conditions and make swift decisions. However, Scott has also experienced his fair share of risk and failure. He notes that it's crucial to build a larger nest egg and save for the future, as even successful entrepreneurs can face uncertainty and downturns. Scott's advice to young entrepreneurs is to focus on building a stable and sustainable business, using a combination of their own capital, bank loans, and investors. When asked if he would start over from scratch, Scott emphasizes the importance of having a solid foundation and a safety net in place. He advises young entrepreneurs to consider buying an established small business, as it can be a lower-risk and more sustainable option. Scott also recommends exploring service-based industries like HVAC, plumbing, or landscaping, which often have lower overhead costs and a proven track record of profitability. Scott's journey is a testament to the power of resilience and adaptability. Despite facing setbacks and failures, he has continued to evolve and adjust his approach, ultimately building a thriving business empire. By sharing his experiences and insights, Scott hopes to inspire and inform the next generation of entrepreneurs. Whether you're just starting out or looking to scale your business, Scott's experiences and lessons learned can help you to stay focused, adapt to changing market conditions, and achieve your goals. It first starts with their education and building of character. David was born and raised in Germantown, Maryland, David's early years were marked by association with a negative crowd, which led his parents to reluctantly withdraw him from public school. This change had a profound impact on David's life, allowing him to break free from negative influences and channel his energy towards academic success. His story serves as a powerful reminder of the significance of peer influence and how it can shape one's life trajectory. Join us on The DMV Business Show with Otto Sevilla as we showcase the inspiring journey of Gregory Vetter, Founder and CEO of Alta Fresh Food Company and Homegrown Brands. He is the author of his upcoming book " Undressed : The Unfiltered Story of My Failed American Dream and How It Led to Success" , were he shares his remarkable journey. As a child, Greg was fascinated by all sports and spent a lot of time outdoors, enjoying activities such as crabbing and fishing on the Severn River and playing lacrosse. This upbringing laid the foundation for his future entrepreneurial spirit and focus on the environment. After college, Greg majored in business, but he didn't have a clear idea of which path to take. To gain insight, he decided to interview the fathers of his lacrosse teammates, who were from various backgrounds, including old money, commercial real estate, and hedge funds. This experience sparked his interest in business and inspired him to read books on successful people, such as Warren Buffett and Walton. Greg spent his free time researching and reading about business and entrepreneurship, which further fueled his passion. After graduating, Greg wrote a thesis on global commercial real estate companies, believing he wanted to pursue a career in real estate finance. However, his first job as a loan officer's assistant was unfulfilling, and he soon realized the real world was not as he expected. This experience was an important turning point for Greg, as it led him to re-evaluate his priorities and pursue his true passion. The turning point for Greg came when he had an epiphany while standing on his head in his living room. This unusual moment led him to call a friend who, surprisingly, had taken his mom's salad dressing from his house without asking. This revelation sparked the idea to start a salad dressing company. Greg and his wife started small, making the dressing in their home kitchen and selling it to local grocery stores. Through dedication and hard work, they grew the company into a national brand, earning a reputation with a sales record and multiple awards. He went on to be selected as Inc Magazine's 35 under 35 and Entrepreneur of the Year. Greg's journey serves as a reminder that our passions can arise from unexpected moments and that it's essential to stay open-minded and willing to take risks. Key insights from his story include: * The importance of reading and learning about successful people and businesses * The value of diversity in exploring different career paths * The power of self-reflection and being willing to pivot when unfulfilled * The importance of family support and collaboration in entrepreneurial ventures The inspiring journey of Greg Vetter serves as a reminder that success often requires taking risks, staying flexible, and being true to oneself. By embracing these principles, entrepreneurs can unlock their potential and create a lasting impact in their industries.
