In observance of the recent celebration of World Bee Day under the theme "Bee engaged - Build Back Better for Bees," today's episode is very buzzworthy.
Today we delve into a vast topic relevant to us here at Sustomi, and that is bees. Without bees, we wouldn't have the beeswax to make our beeswax wraps, and we wouldn't have the fantastic products that help keep all your food fresh.
So in this episode, I brought in Julian from the Tasmanian Honey Company. He has had a long career in beekeeping and a long family history, so he's very knowledgeable about the world of bees. And we dug deep into the topics around bees, how beehives work, the impact of having them in the environment, if any, how to keep them healthy, particularly some of the threats that are currently around the bees, and how human actions have impacted the landscape.
In This Episode, We Talk About:

  • How do beehives function to produce honey
  • How do you keep protein levels in hives
  • What's the best-balanced diet for bees
  • How to ensure that the honey you're getting is Manuka honey
  • The ecological impacts of moving the hives
  • The explanation behind bees as Superorganisms
  • What royal jelly is
  • Why do you need to breed Queen Bees
  • The potential threats to bee colonies across the world
  • Some of the viruses or diseases that kill the hives
  • Things people can do at home to help the bees
  • The impacts of plastics on bees
